5. Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of the ERPF-400-12 power supply. Follow these guidelines carefully:
- The ERPF-400 is designed for outdoor applications and should be installed in a place with shelter to protect it from direct weather exposure.
- The unit must be installed in an upright position. Leaning forward, backward, or laying flat are not permitted as these orientations can impede proper cooling and affect performance.

Image: Illustration of correct and incorrect installation orientations.
- For optimal heat dissipation, maintain at least 20cm of installation distance around the power supply unit (PSU) as shown in the diagram below. This ensures adequate airflow and prevents overheating.

Image: Recommended clearance for heat dissipation.
6. Setup and Wiring
Before connecting any wires, ensure the power supply is disconnected from the AC mains. Refer to the terminal assignment diagram for correct wiring.
Terminal Pin Assignment
The input and output terminals are clearly marked. Connect your AC input and DC load according to the following table and the diagram provided in the Product Overview section.
| Pin No. | Assignment | Max mounting torque |
|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | AC/L | 8Kgf-cm |
| 3 | AC/N | |
| 4-6 | DC OUTPUT +V | |
| 7-9 | DC OUTPUT -V |
- Connect the AC Live (L) wire to pin 1 or 2.
- Connect the AC Neutral (N) wire to pin 3.
- Connect the positive (+) terminal of your load to pins 4-6.
- Connect the negative (-) terminal of your load to pins 7-9.
- Ensure all connections are secure and tightened to the specified torque to prevent loose connections and potential hazards.
7. Operating Instructions
Once the power supply is correctly installed and wired, you can proceed with operation:
- Apply Input Power: Connect the AC mains power to the unit.
- Verify Operation: Check for the presence of the LED indicator, which typically illuminates when the unit is receiving input power and providing output.
- Load Connection: Ensure your load is connected correctly to the DC output terminals.
- Voltage Adjustment: If necessary, use the voltage adjustment potentiometer (if available and accessible) to fine-tune the output voltage within the specified range (10.8 ~ 13.2V for ERPF-400-12).
- Monitor Performance: Observe the power supply and connected load for stable operation. Refer to the derating curve and static characteristics in the datasheet (Image 2) to understand the operational limits under different ambient temperatures and input voltages.
8. Maintenance
The ERPF-400-12 power supply is designed for reliable operation with minimal maintenance. However, following these general guidelines can help ensure its longevity:
- Cleaning: Periodically clean the exterior of the unit to prevent dust and debris buildup, especially around ventilation openings. Use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners.
- Connections: Regularly inspect all wiring connections to ensure they remain tight and free from corrosion. Loose connections can lead to poor performance or safety hazards.
- Environment: Ensure the operating environment remains within the specified temperature and humidity ranges.
- No User-Serviceable Parts: There are no user-serviceable parts inside the power supply. Do not attempt to open or repair the unit yourself. Doing so will void the warranty and may pose a safety risk.
9. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your ERPF-400-12 power supply, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- No Output Power / LED Off:
- Check the AC input voltage and ensure it is within the specified range (90-264VAC).
- Verify all input and output wiring connections are secure.
- Check for blown fuses in the AC input line (if applicable to your installation).
- Output Voltage Fluctuates or is Low:
- Ensure the load current does not exceed the rated output current (30A for ERPF-400-12). The unit may enter constant current mode under overload.
- Check for loose connections at the output terminals.
- Verify the ambient temperature is within the operating range and that there is adequate ventilation. Over-temperature protection may reduce output.
- Unit Shuts Down (Overload Protection):
- The unit will shut down or enter constant current mode if the load exceeds 105-135% of the rated output power. Reduce the load connected to the power supply. The unit should recover automatically once the overload is removed.
- Unit Shuts Down (Short Circuit Protection):
- If a short circuit occurs at the output, the unit will limit the current. Remove the short circuit condition. The unit is designed to recover automatically once the fault is cleared.
- Unit Shuts Down (Over Voltage Protection):
- If the output voltage exceeds the specified OVP threshold (13.8-16.2V for ERPF-400-12), the unit will shut down. To recover, disconnect the AC input power for a few seconds and then re-apply it. Investigate the cause of the overvoltage.
- Unit Shuts Down (Over Temperature Protection):
- If the internal temperature exceeds safe limits, the unit will shut down. Ensure proper ventilation and ambient temperature. The unit will recover automatically once the temperature drops to a safe level.
If the problem persists after attempting these troubleshooting steps, contact MEAN WELL technical support or your authorized dealer for assistance.
