5. Setup

5.1 Device Placement

The FortiSwitch-108E is a fanless device, suitable for quiet environments. It can be placed on a desktop or mounted in a rack using the included rack-mount kit.

  • Ensure adequate space for ventilation around the device.
  • Avoid placing the switch in direct sunlight or near strong electromagnetic fields.

5.2 Power Connection

The FortiSwitch-108E supports dual power options: standard AC power and Power over Ethernet Powered Device (PoE PD).

  • AC Power: Connect the provided power cable to the AC power input on the rear panel and then to a grounded electrical outlet.
  • PoE PD: The switch can also be powered by a compatible PoE source connected to one of its RJ45 ports (typically port 8, as indicated by 'PoE PD' label). This allows for flexible deployment where AC power might not be readily available.

5.3 Network Connections

  • RJ45 Ports: Connect Ethernet cables from your network devices (computers, servers, access points) to the RJ45 ports (1-8).
  • SFP Ports: Insert compatible SFP transceivers into the SFP ports (9-10) and connect fiber optic cables for longer distance or higher bandwidth uplinks.

5.4 Initial Configuration

The FortiSwitch-108E is designed for integration with a FortiGate Network Security Platform. Management is typically performed through the FortiGate interface.

  • Connect the FortiSwitch to a FortiGate device.
  • Access the FortiGate interface to discover and authorize the FortiSwitch.
  • Configure VLANs, port settings, and security policies as required through the FortiGate controller.
  • For direct console access, connect a serial cable from your management workstation to the console port on the switch and use a terminal emulator (e.g., PuTTY) with appropriate serial settings (e.g., 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit).

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 LED Indicators

Monitor the LEDs on the front panel to understand the switch's status:

  • Power LED:
    • Solid Green: Device is powered on and operating normally.
    • Off: Device is powered off or not receiving power.
  • Alarm LED:
    • Solid Red/Amber: Indicates a system error or alarm condition. Refer to the FortiGate interface or console for details.
    • Off: No active alarms.
  • Link/Act LEDs (per port):
    • Solid Green/Amber: A network link is established.
    • Flashing Green/Amber: Data activity is occurring on the port.
    • Off: No network link detected.

6.2 FortiGate Switch Controller Management

Once integrated with a FortiGate, the FortiSwitch can be managed centrally. This includes:

  • Creating and assigning VLANs to switch ports.
  • Monitoring port status and traffic statistics.
  • Applying security policies and access controls.
  • Performing firmware upgrades.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

  • Ensure the device is powered off and disconnected from all power sources before cleaning.
  • Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior of the switch.
  • Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners, as they may damage the device.

7.2 Firmware Updates

Regularly check for and apply firmware updates to ensure optimal performance, security, and access to new features. Firmware updates are typically managed through the connected FortiGate controller.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your FortiSwitch, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power:
    • Check if the power cable is securely connected to both the switch and the power outlet.
    • Verify the power outlet is functional.
    • If using PoE PD, ensure the PoE source is active and providing sufficient power.
  • No Link on Port:
    • Ensure the Ethernet or fiber cable is securely connected at both ends.
    • Verify the connected device is powered on and functioning correctly.
    • Try a different cable or port.
  • FortiSwitch Not Visible in FortiGate:
    • Ensure the FortiSwitch is powered on and connected to the FortiGate.
    • Check network connectivity between the FortiSwitch and FortiGate.
    • Refer to the FortiGate documentation for FortiSwitch discovery and authorization procedures.
  • Alarm LED is On:
    • Access the FortiGate interface or connect via the console port to view detailed alarm messages.
    • Consult Fortinet support resources for specific alarm codes.

If issues persist, contact Fortinet technical support.
