1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your Smartwares RM370/2 Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the device and retain it for future reference. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be fatal. This detector is designed to alert you to the presence of CO gas, providing an early warning to help prevent CO poisoning.
2. Important Safety Information
- WARNING: This carbon monoxide alarm is designed to detect carbon monoxide gas from any source of combustion. It is NOT designed to detect smoke, fire, or other gases.
- WARNING: This product is intended for use in ordinary indoor locations of family living units. It is not designed to measure compliance with commercial or industrial standards.
- WARNING: This device should be installed by a competent person. It is not a substitute for proper installation, use, and maintenance of fuel-burning appliances, including appropriate ventilation and exhaust systems.
- WARNING: Do not paint the detector. Paint can clog the openings and interfere with the sensor's ability to detect CO.
- WARNING: Test the detector weekly to ensure proper operation.
- WARNING: If the alarm sounds, immediately move to fresh air, call emergency services, and do not re-enter the premises until it has been deemed safe by professionals.

5. Setup and Installation
5.1 Choosing a Location
Proper placement of your CO detector is crucial for effective detection. Carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air and mixes readily with it. For optimal protection, install detectors:
- On every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
- Within 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) of fuel-burning appliances.
- On a wall, at least 1.5 meters (5 feet) from the floor, or on the ceiling.
- Avoid placing the detector in direct sunlight, in areas with high humidity, near ventilation openings, or behind curtains/furniture.

5.2 Battery Installation
The detector requires 3 Lithium metal batteries. These are typically included and may be pre-installed. If not, open the battery compartment on the back of the unit and insert the batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-). Close the compartment securely.
5.3 Mounting the Detector
- Mark the desired mounting location on the wall or ceiling.
- Drill two holes at the marked positions.
- Insert the provided wall plugs into the drilled holes.
- Screw the mounting bracket (if separate) or the detector directly onto the wall using the provided screws. Ensure it is firmly attached.
- Once mounted, perform a test as described in Section 6.2.
6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Understanding the Display and Indicators

Image: A detailed view of the detector's front panel, highlighting the LED indicators for Power, Fault, and Alarm, along with the LCD screen and its associated status messages.
The Smartwares RM370/2 features an LCD display and three LED indicators:
- POWER (Green LED): Flashes periodically to indicate the detector is powered on and functioning correctly.
- FAULT (Yellow LED): Illuminates or flashes to indicate a fault with the sensor or low battery. The LCD may show "Err" for a fault.
- ALARM (Red LED): Flashes rapidly accompanied by an audible alarm when carbon monoxide is detected at dangerous levels. The LCD may show "Hco" (High CO) during an alarm.
- LCD Display: Shows current CO concentration in parts per million (PPM) or ambient temperature. It also displays status messages like "Err" (Fault), "Test" (during self-test), or "Hco" (High CO).
6.2 Testing the Detector
Press and hold the TEST/MENU button for a few seconds. The detector will emit a series of loud beeps, and the red ALARM LED will flash. The LCD display will show "Test". This confirms that the alarm and electronic circuitry are working. Test the detector weekly.
6.3 What to do if the Alarm Sounds
If the CO alarm sounds:
- Evacuate Immediately: Move everyone to fresh air outdoors or open windows and doors to ventilate the area.
- Call Emergency Services: Contact your local emergency services or fire department.
- Do Not Re-enter: Do not re-enter the premises until it has been aired out and deemed safe by a qualified professional.
- Identify the Source: Have a qualified technician inspect and repair any fuel-burning equipment that may be the source of CO.
7. Maintenance
7.1 Battery Replacement
The detector is equipped with a 1-year replaceable battery. When the battery is low, the yellow FAULT LED will flash, and the detector will chirp periodically. Replace all three batteries with new Lithium metal batteries immediately. Refer to Section 5.2 for battery installation instructions.
7.2 Cleaning the Detector
Dust and debris can affect the detector's performance. Clean the detector regularly (at least once a month) by gently vacuuming the vents with a soft brush attachment or wiping the exterior with a damp cloth. Do not use cleaning agents or solvents.
7.3 End-of-Life Warning
The CO sensor has a lifespan of 7 years. After 7 years, the detector will indicate its end-of-life with a specific warning (e.g., a series of chirps or a message on the display). When this occurs, the entire unit must be replaced. Do not attempt to repair or replace the sensor.

8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Alarm sounds, Red LED flashes, LCD shows "Hco" | High level of Carbon Monoxide detected. | Evacuate immediately, call emergency services. Do not re-enter until safe. |
| Yellow FAULT LED flashes, detector chirps periodically | Low battery warning. | Replace all 3 Lithium metal batteries immediately. |
| Yellow FAULT LED illuminates, LCD shows "Err" | Sensor fault or internal error. | Perform a test. If the error persists, the unit may be faulty and needs replacement. |
| Detector chirps with no CO reading or fault indication | End-of-life warning (after 7 years). | Replace the entire detector unit. |
| No power/display | Batteries are dead or incorrectly installed. | Check battery polarity or replace with new batteries. |
