3. Setup

3.1 Battery Installation

The Foretrex 701 operates on two AAA batteries. For optimal performance and battery life, it is recommended to use high-quality alkaline or lithium AAA batteries. Ensure correct polarity when inserting the batteries.

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
  2. Open the cover by sliding or unlatching it according to the markings.
  3. Insert two AAA batteries, observing the positive (+) and negative (-) indicators within the compartment.
  4. Securely close the battery compartment cover.

3.2 Initial Power On

After installing the batteries, press and hold the Power button located on the side of the device until the Garmin logo appears on the screen. The device will then initiate its startup sequence.

4.1 Basic Navigation

The Foretrex 701 utilizes GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo satellite systems to provide accurate positioning. Use the PAGE button to cycle through different data screens, including the compass, map, and trip computer.

4.2 Tracking and Waypoints

  1. To mark a waypoint, press the MARK button.
  2. To view saved waypoints, tracks, or routes, navigate to the main menu using the PAGE button and select the appropriate option.

4.3 Applied Ballistics Elite Software

The Foretrex 701 Ballistic Edition includes Applied Ballistics Elite software to calculate aiming solutions for long-range shooting. This feature provides critical data such as elevation, windage, and holdovers.

4.4 Stealth Mode

Stealth Mode disables all wireless communications and hides GPS data, allowing users to track distance traveled during training or operations without recording specific location data. This ensures discretion and confidentiality.

4.5 Jumpmaster Mode

Jumpmaster Mode calculates high-altitude release points in accordance with military guidelines, supporting HAHO (High Altitude High Opening), HALO (High Altitude Low Opening), and Static jump types.

4.6 Kill Switch

The Kill Switch hotkey performs a quick reset on the unit, restoring it to its factory settings and erasing all stored user data. This feature is designed for situations where immediate data erasure is required.

4.7 Smart Notifications

When paired with a compatible smartphone via the Garmin Explore app, the Foretrex 701 can display smart notifications such as texts, emails, and alerts directly on its screen. This allows you to stay updated without needing to check your phone separately.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning the Device
