Rain Bird ESP-ME3-A1 Irrigation Controller Instruction Manual

Model: ESP-ME3-A1 | Brand: Rain Bird

1. Introduction

The Rain Bird ESP-ME3-A1 is a versatile irrigation controller designed for both residential and light commercial applications. This model comes with 4 stations and is expandable up to 22 stations with optional modules, providing flexibility for various irrigation needs. It features Wi-Fi readiness, allowing for smart control and water management when paired with the LNK Wi-Fi module (sold separately).

2. Key Features

  • Expandable Stations: Starts with 4 zones, expandable up to 22 zones with optional station modules.
  • Indoor/Outdoor Installation: Includes a power cord for plug-in installations; cord can be removed for hardwiring the internal transformer to a junction box.
  • Non-Volatile Memory: Retains controller settings indefinitely, even after prolonged power outages.
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity (Optional): Compatible with the Rain Bird LNK Wi-Fi Module (sold separately) for remote access, operation, and monitoring via the enhanced Rain Bird app. Enables internet-based weather adjustments for water savings.
  • Flow Monitoring (Optional): Compatible with wired flow sensors (sold separately) for water monitoring and notifications, helping to save water and prevent property damage.

3. Setup & Installation

3.1. Mounting the Controller

Choose a suitable indoor or outdoor location for mounting the controller. Ensure it is within 6 feet of an AC power outlet and away from major appliances or air conditioners to minimize Wi-Fi interference. Use appropriate drywall anchors if necessary.

3.2. Wiring Connections

Before making any wiring connections, ensure the power to the controller is disconnected. If replacing an existing controller, take a photo of the old wiring for reference. Route all field wires through the opening at the bottom of the controller. Do not route valve wires through the same opening as the power wires to avoid interference.

  • Zone Wires: Connect one valve wire from each valve to one of the numbered zone terminals (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) on the controller.
  • Common Wire: Attach the common wire (usually white) to the common terminal marked 'C'.
  • Sensor Wires: If installing a Rain/Freeze sensor, remove the yellow jumper wire connecting the 'SENS' terminals and connect the sensor wires to these terminals. The controller will not function if this jumper is removed and no sensor is connected.
  • Power: Plug in the power cord or hardwire the internal transformer.
