Loctite 0151™ Hysol® Adhesive User Manual

Model: 398470-30769

1. Introduction

1.1 Product Overview

The Loctite 0151™ Hysol® Adhesive is a clear, two-part epoxy adhesive designed for applications requiring an extended open time. This allows for ample opportunity to make adjustments before the adhesive begins to set, ensuring precise positioning and strong bonding. It is particularly suitable for bonding various materials, including glass, in art, craft, and general industrial applications.

1.2 Safety Information

WARNING: Read all safety data sheets and technical data sheets before use.

  • Ensure adequate ventilation during use.
  • Avoid contact with skin and eyes. In case of contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves and eye protection.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not ingest. If swallowed, seek immediate medical attention.

2. Product Components

The Loctite 0151™ Hysol® Adhesive typically comes as a two-part system, consisting of two separate tubes or containers: one for the resin and one for the hardener. These components must be mixed thoroughly before application to initiate the curing process.

3. Preparation

3.1 Surface Preparation

For optimal bonding, surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from grease, oil, dust, and other contaminants. Abrading surfaces with sandpaper or a wire brush can improve adhesion, especially on smooth materials like glass. After abrasion, clean the surface thoroughly to remove any loose particles.

3.2 Environmental Conditions

Apply adhesive in a well-ventilated area. Ensure the ambient temperature is within the recommended range for the adhesive (typically room temperature, 20-25°C or 68-77°F) to ensure proper mixing and curing.

4. Mixing Instructions

The Loctite 0151™ Hysol® Adhesive is a two-part system that requires precise mixing for proper performance. Refer to the product packaging for the exact mixing ratio, typically 1:1 by volume for many Hysol epoxies.

  1. Dispense equal amounts of Part A (resin) and Part B (hardener) onto a clean, non-absorbent mixing surface.
  2. Using a clean mixing stick or spatula, thoroughly mix the two components until a uniform color and consistency are achieved. This usually takes 1-2 minutes. Ensure no streaks of unmixed material remain.
  3. Mix only the amount that can be used within the adhesive's specified working time (pot life).

5. Application

5.1 Applying the Adhesive

Apply a thin, even layer of the mixed adhesive to one of the prepared surfaces. For larger areas, spread the adhesive uniformly to ensure complete coverage.

5.2 Working Time (Open Time)

The Loctite 0151™ Hysol® Adhesive features an extended open time, providing ample opportunity to position and adjust components before the adhesive begins to set. This allows for precise alignment and reduces the stress of rapid bonding. Refer to the product's technical data sheet for the exact working time, which can vary with temperature and humidity.

5.3 Assembly

Bring the two surfaces together and apply firm, even pressure. Clamping or fixturing may be necessary to maintain contact during the initial cure phase, especially for vertical applications or heavy components.

6. Curing

The adhesive will begin to set within its open time, but full strength is achieved after a longer curing period. Curing time can be affected by temperature; higher temperatures generally accelerate curing, while lower temperatures slow it down. Allow sufficient time for the adhesive to reach its full bond strength before subjecting the bonded assembly to stress or handling.

7. Cleanup and Storage

7.1 Cleanup

Clean excess uncured adhesive from tools and surfaces immediately using a suitable solvent (e.g., isopropyl alcohol or acetone). Once cured, the adhesive is very difficult to remove and may require mechanical means.

7.2 Storage

Store the unmixed components in their original, tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Proper storage ensures the longevity and effectiveness of the adhesive. Refer to the product packaging for specific storage temperature recommendations.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Adhesive Not Curing or Curing Too Slowly:

    • Ensure correct mixing ratio of Part A and Part B.
    • Verify thorough mixing until uniform.
    • Check ambient temperature; low temperatures can significantly slow curing.
  • Weak Bond or Delamination:

    • Surfaces may not have been adequately cleaned or prepared.
    • Insufficient adhesive applied.
    • Components moved or disturbed during the initial cure phase.
    • Adhesive may have expired or been improperly stored.
