Setup and First Use

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect for any damage.
  2. Initial Cleaning: Before first use, wash all parts of the French press in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely. This ensures cleanliness and removes any manufacturing residues.
  3. Assembly: Ensure the plunger assembly (filter screen, spiral plate, and cross plate) is securely attached to the rod and the lid. The glass jug should be seated firmly within the stainless steel frame.

Operating Instructions

Follow these steps to brew delicious coffee with your Bodum Caffettiera French Press:

  1. Step 1: Add Coffee Grounds. For each 4 oz (120 ml) cup, place one rounded tablespoon (approximately 7 grams) of coarse ground coffee into the glass jug. Adjust quantity to your preferred strength.
  2. Step 2: Pour Hot Water. Heat fresh water to just below boiling (around 92-96°C / 195-205°F). Do not use boiling water directly. Pour the hot water into the jug, ensuring all coffee grounds are saturated. Stir gently with a non-metal spoon.
  3. Step 3: Brew. Place the lid on the jug with the plunger pulled up. Turn the lid to close off the pour spout opening to retain heat. Allow the coffee to brew for at least 4 minutes. For stronger coffee, you may extend the brewing time.
  4. Step 4: Press and Serve. Slowly and steadily press the plunger down, applying slight pressure on the knob. Do not force the plunger. Once pressed, turn the lid to open the pour spout and serve your freshly brewed coffee immediately.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Proper cleaning ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your French press.

  • Daily Cleaning: After each use, discard coffee grounds and rinse the French press with warm water. Disassemble the plunger and wash all parts with a soft sponge and mild dish soap.
  • Dishwasher Safe: The Bodum Caffettiera French Press is dishwasher safe. However, hand washing is recommended for a longer lifespan of the product, especially for the glass jug and the frame.
  • Drying: Ensure all components are thoroughly dried before reassembly and storage to prevent water spots or mineral buildup.
  • Storage: Store the French press in a clean, dry place.

Troubleshooting

  • Weak Coffee:
    • Ensure you are using enough coffee grounds for the water volume.
    • Verify water temperature is between 92-96°C (195-205°F).
    • Increase brewing time (e.g., from 4 minutes to 5-6 minutes).
    • Use a coarser grind if coffee is too weak and watery.
  • Grounds in Coffee:
    • Ensure coffee grounds are coarse. Fine grounds can pass through the filter.
    • Press the plunger slowly and steadily. Rapid pressing can force grounds past the filter.
    • Check the filter screen for damage or misalignment. Replace if necessary.
  • Plunger Difficult to Press:
    • The coffee grind might be too fine, creating too much resistance. Use a coarser grind.
    • Ensure the filter screen is clean and free of trapped grounds.
