WARNING: To avoid electrical shock, remove test leads before replacing the battery or opening the case. Always adhere to safety guidelines when working with electrical circuits.
Observe the following safety precautions:
- Do not use the device if it appears damaged or if the insulation on the test leads is compromised.
- Ensure the correct function and range are selected before making measurements.
- Do not exceed the maximum input values for any range.
- Always disconnect power to the circuit under test before connecting or disconnecting test leads, especially when measuring current.
- Use caution when working with voltages above 30 V AC RMS, 42 V peak, or 60 V DC, as these pose a shock hazard.
- Replace the battery promptly when the low battery indicator appears to ensure accurate readings.
- Refer to IEC 61010 standards for safe operation of measurement equipment.

4. Setup
4.1. Battery Installation
The VOLTCRAFT VC-440 E requires one 9V battery (included). To install or replace the battery:
- Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF and all test leads are disconnected from the device and any circuit.
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the multimeter (refer to Figure 3.2).
- Unscrew the retaining screw(s) for the battery cover.
- Carefully remove the battery cover.
- Connect the 9V battery to the battery clip, observing correct polarity.
- Place the battery into the compartment.
- Replace the battery cover and secure it with the screw(s).
Note: A low battery indicator will appear on the display when the battery needs replacement.
5. Operating Instructions
Before any measurement, ensure the test leads are correctly inserted into the appropriate input jacks and the rotary switch is set to the desired function.
5.1. Measuring DC Voltage (V-)
- Insert the red test lead into the VΩHz jack and the black test lead into the COM jack.
- Turn the rotary switch to the V- position.
- Connect the test leads across the component or circuit to be measured.
- Read the voltage value on the display.
5.2. Measuring AC Voltage (V~)
- Insert the red test lead into the VΩHz jack and the black test lead into the COM jack.
- Turn the rotary switch to the V~ position.
- Connect the test leads across the component or circuit to be measured.
- Read the voltage value on the display.
5.3. Measuring Resistance (Ω)
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized before measuring resistance.
- Insert the red test lead into the VΩHz jack and the black test lead into the COM jack.
- Turn the rotary switch to the Ω position. If necessary, press SELECT to cycle to resistance measurement.
- Connect the test leads across the component.
- Read the resistance value on the display.
5.4. Measuring Current (A~ / A-)
CAUTION: Never connect the multimeter in parallel with a voltage source when measuring current. Always connect it in series with the load.
- De-energize the circuit and open it at the point where current is to be measured.
- For currents up to 600mA, insert the red test lead into the mAµA jack. For currents up to 10A, insert the red test lead into the 10A jack. Insert the black test lead into the COM jack.
- Turn the rotary switch to the appropriate A~ or A- position. Use SELECT to choose AC or DC current if needed.
- Connect the test leads in series with the circuit.
- Re-energize the circuit and read the current value on the display.
5.5. Measuring Frequency (Hz)
- Insert the red test lead into the VΩHz jack and the black test lead into the COM jack.
- Turn the rotary switch to the Hz position.
- Connect the test leads across the signal source.
- Read the frequency value on the display.
6. Maintenance
6.1. Cleaning
Wipe the multimeter casing with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the device is completely dry before use.
6.2. Battery Replacement
Refer to Section 4.1 for detailed instructions on battery replacement. Always use a fresh 9V battery.
6.3. Fuse Replacement
The current input jacks (mAµA and 10A) are protected by fuses. If current measurements fail, the fuse may need replacement. Fuse replacement should only be performed by qualified personnel. Refer to the full technical manual for fuse specifications and replacement procedures.
7. Troubleshooting
- No display or faint display: Check battery charge. Replace the 9V battery if necessary.
- Incorrect readings:
- Ensure test leads are correctly inserted and making good contact.
- Verify the rotary switch is set to the correct function and range.
- Check for damaged test leads.
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized for resistance measurements.
- Current measurement not working: Check the fuse for the relevant current input (mAµA or 10A). Replace if blown (refer to Section 6.3).
- "OL" or "OVERLOAD" on display: The measured value exceeds the selected range. Switch to a higher range or ensure the input is within the device's maximum specifications.
