3.3. Initial Sprayer Preparation

IMPORTANT: This sprayer arrives from the factory with a small amount of test material in the system. It is crucial that you flush this material from the sprayer before first use. Follow the flushing procedure outlined in the 'Maintenance' section to prepare the unit.

Attach a clean 32 oz FlexLiner Bag to the sprayer's cup. Ensure the bag is properly seated to prevent air from entering the system during operation.

4. Operating the Sprayer

4.1. Loading Paint

Pour your filtered paint material into a clean 32 oz FlexLiner Bag. Do not overfill. Ensure the paint is properly mixed and thinned according to the paint manufacturer's recommendations for airless spraying, if necessary. The Graco Ultra Max is designed for a Perfect Airless Finish at Any Speed without thinning for many materials, but always check paint specifications.

4.2. Priming the Pump

Before spraying, the pump must be primed to remove air from the system. Follow the instructions in your detailed user manual for the specific priming procedure, which typically involves setting the sprayer to 'Prime' mode and allowing material to circulate until air is purged.

4.3. Spraying Techniques

Hold the sprayer approximately 10-12 inches from the surface. Maintain a consistent distance and speed for an even coat. Overlap each pass by about 50% to ensure full coverage. Practice on a scrap piece of material to familiarize yourself with the spray pattern and flow before applying to your project surface.

The sprayer uses RAC X FFLP Spray Tips, which are designed for fine finish low pressure spraying. Select the appropriate tip (210 or 514) based on the material and desired spray pattern.

5. Maintenance

Proper maintenance is essential for the longevity and performance of your Graco Ultra Max sprayer. Always clean the sprayer immediately after each use.

5.1. Cleaning Procedure

  1. Remove the FlexLiner Bag and dispose of any remaining paint properly.
  2. Fill a new FlexLiner Bag with appropriate cleaning solution (water for latex, mineral spirits for oil-based paints).
  3. Attach the bag to the sprayer.
  4. Engage the pump and spray the cleaning solution into a waste container until it runs clear.
  5. Remove the spray tip and guard, clean them thoroughly with a brush and cleaning solution.
  6. For long-term storage, use 4 oz Bottle of Pump Armor Storage Fluid. Pour a small amount into the sprayer and run it through the system to protect internal components from corrosion and freezing.

5.2. Storage

Store the sprayer in a clean, dry place away from extreme temperatures. Ensure all components are clean and dry before storage. The durable storage bag provided is ideal for protecting the unit.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Graco Ultra Max sprayer, refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:

  • No Spray or Low Pressure: Check for clogs in the tip, filter, or hose. Ensure the FlexLiner bag is properly sealed and not collapsed. Verify the pump is primed and the battery is charged.
  • Inconsistent Spray Pattern: This often indicates a partially clogged tip or incorrect thinning of the material. Clean the tip or adjust material viscosity.
  • Leaking: Check all connections for tightness. Inspect seals and O-rings for wear or damage.
  • Pump Failure: Ensure proper cleaning and storage with Pump Armor. If the pump is damaged, it may require replacement. The Triax Triple Piston Pump with ProConnect is designed for durability but is fully repairable for extended life.
