Setup Guide

1. Attaching the Microphone

  1. Carefully insert the Movo VXR10 microphone into the red shock mount. Ensure it is securely seated to minimize vibrations.
  2. Attach the shock mount to your camera's hot shoe or cold shoe mount. For smartphone rigs, use a compatible cold shoe adapter (not included).

2. Connecting to Devices

The VXR10 comes with two types of 3.5mm cables for different devices:

  • 3.5mm TRS Output Cable: Use this cable for DSLR cameras, camcorders, and audio recorders. Plug one end into the microphone and the other into your device's 3.5mm microphone input jack.
  • 3.5mm TRRS Output Cable: Use this cable for smartphones, tablets, and Mac computers. Plug one end into the microphone and the other into your device's 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack.

Note for Smartphones: Depending on your smartphone model, a Lightning or USB-C dongle/adapter may be required (not included) if your device does not have a 3.5mm jack.

Operating Your Movo VXR10

Optimal Usage

  • Distance: The ideal distance range for the VXR10 is between 1-foot and 5-feet away from the sound source. Closer use may result in audio peaking, and further distances may result in muffled audio.
  • Windscreen: For outdoor recording or in windy conditions, always use the included furry "Deadcat" windscreen to effectively reduce wind noise and ensure clear audio.
  • Battery-Free Operation: The VXR10 does not require batteries. It draws power directly from your connected device through the audio cable (plug-in power).

Recording Tips

  • Ensure your device's audio input settings are correctly configured to use an external microphone.
  • Monitor your audio levels during recording, if your device allows, to prevent clipping or distortion.
  • Test your setup with a short recording before important sessions to confirm optimal sound quality.

Care and Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the microphone body. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the microphone and its accessories in the provided soft carrying pouch to protect them from dust, dirt, and physical damage.
  • Handling: Handle the microphone and shock mount with care. While durable, excessive force can cause damage.
  • Environment: Avoid exposing the microphone to extreme temperatures, high humidity, or direct sunlight for prolonged periods.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

ProblemSolution
No audio or low audio level
  • Ensure the microphone is securely connected to your device.
  • Verify that the correct cable (TRS for cameras, TRRS for smartphones/tablets) is being used.
  • Check your device's audio input settings to ensure an external microphone is selected and input levels are adequate.
  • For smartphones without a 3.5mm jack, confirm your Lightning or USB-C dongle/adapter is functioning correctly.
  • Ensure your device provides plug-in power to the microphone. Most devices are compatible, but some older camcorders (e.g., certain Canon VIXIA models) may not provide sufficient power.
Muffled or distorted audio
  • Check the distance between the microphone and the sound source. The ideal range is 1-5 feet. Being too close can cause peaking, and too far can result in muffled sound.
  • Ensure the furry windscreen is not obstructing the microphone's capsule.
  • Reduce background noise in your recording environment.
Excessive handling noise
  • Ensure the microphone is properly seated in the shock mount.
  • Avoid touching the microphone or camera/rig during recording.
  • The shock mount is designed to minimize handling noise; ensure it is not damaged.
