- Quick Start Guide (this document)
1.2 System Requirements
- Windows 7 or higher, or macOS 10.12 or higher
- Available USB 3.0 (for optimal speed) or USB 2.0 port
1.3 Connecting the Drive
To connect your Seagate Expansion Portable Hard Drive to your computer, follow these steps:
- Locate the USB 3.0 Micro-B port on your Seagate Expansion drive. This port is typically found on one of the shorter sides of the drive.
- Connect the small end of the provided USB 3.0 cable to the USB 3.0 Micro-B port on the drive.
- Connect the standard USB-A end of the cable to an available USB port on your computer. For best performance, use a USB 3.0 port (often blue or marked with a 'SS' symbol).
- The drive will power on automatically and be detected by your operating system. No external power adapter is required.

2. Operating Your Drive
2.1 Data Transfer
Once connected, your Seagate Expansion drive will appear as a removable storage device in your computer's file explorer (Windows) or Finder (macOS). You can transfer files by:
- Dragging and Dropping: Select files or folders on your computer and drag them to the Seagate drive icon or an open folder on the drive.
- Copy and Paste: Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (macOS) on files/folders, select 'Copy', then navigate to the Seagate drive, right-click in an empty space, and select 'Paste'.
2.2 Drive Formatting (Optional)
The drive comes pre-formatted for Windows. If you intend to use the drive primarily with macOS, or if you encounter compatibility issues, you may need to reformat it. Formatting erases all data on the drive, so ensure you back up any important files before proceeding.
For detailed instructions on formatting, refer to your operating system's documentation or Seagate's support website.
2.3 Safely Disconnecting the Drive
To prevent data corruption, always safely eject or unmount your Seagate Expansion drive before physically disconnecting it.
- Windows: Click the 'Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media' icon in the system tray, then select your Seagate drive. Wait for the 'Safe to Remove Hardware' notification before unplugging.
- macOS: Drag the drive icon from your desktop to the Trash, or right-click (Control-click) the drive icon and select 'Eject'. Wait for the icon to disappear before unplugging.
3. Care and Maintenance
Proper care ensures the longevity and reliability of your external hard drive:
- Physical Protection: Avoid dropping the drive or exposing it to strong impacts.
- Environmental Conditions: Keep the drive away from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and high humidity.
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
- Data Backup: Regularly back up critical data stored on the drive to another location to prevent data loss from unforeseen circumstances.
4. Troubleshooting
4.1 Drive Not Detected
- Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the drive and the computer.
- Try connecting the drive to a different USB port on your computer.
- Test the drive on another computer to rule out a computer-specific issue.
- If using a desktop, try connecting to a USB port directly on the motherboard (rear ports).
4.2 Slow Performance
- Ensure the drive is connected to a USB 3.0 port for optimal speed. USB 2.0 ports will result in slower transfer rates.
- Close any unnecessary applications running in the background that might be consuming system resources.
- For Windows users, consider running Disk Defragmenter periodically, though modern operating systems often manage this automatically.
4.3 Data Loss Prevention
While external hard drives are reliable, no storage device is immune to failure. Always maintain multiple copies of your important data. Consider cloud storage or another backup drive for critical files.
