5. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your DeepMind 12D for the first time.

  1. Placement: Place the DeepMind 12D on a stable, flat surface, ensuring adequate ventilation around the unit.
  2. Power Connection: Connect the supplied power cable to the POWER input on the rear panel and then to a suitable AC power outlet.
  3. Audio Connection: Connect the OUTPUT L and R jacks to your audio interface, mixer, or amplifier using 6.35mm (1/4-inch) TS or TRS cables.
  4. MIDI/USB Connection (Optional):
    • For MIDI control from an external device (e.g., MIDI keyboard, sequencer), connect a MIDI cable from the external device's MIDI OUT to the DeepMind 12D's MIDI IN.
    • For computer connectivity (MIDI over USB), connect a USB cable from the DeepMind 12D's USB port to your computer's USB port.
  5. Power On: Press the POWER button on the rear panel to turn on the unit.

6. Operating the DeepMind 12D

This section covers the basic operation and sound design principles of the DeepMind 12D.

6.1 Patch Selection and Editing

The DeepMind 12D comes with numerous factory presets. Use the BANK/UP and DATA ENTRY controls to navigate and select patches. To edit a patch, simply adjust any of the physical controls on the front panel. The display will show the parameter value as you adjust it.

  • Saving Patches: After editing a sound, press the WRITE button to save your changes to a user memory slot.
  • Global Settings: Access global settings (e.g., MIDI channels, tuning) via the GLOBAL button.

6.2 Sound Synthesis Basics

The DeepMind 12D's analog architecture allows for extensive sound design possibilities.

  • Oscillators (OSC 1 & 2): Control the fundamental tone. Adjust PITCH, PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), and LEVEL. OSC 1 offers Sawtooth and PWM Square waves, while OSC 2 offers a 50% Square wave.
  • Filter (VCF): Shape the harmonic content. Adjust FREQ (Cutoff Frequency) and RES (Resonance). The DeepMind 12D features a 2-pole or 4-pole filter.
  • Envelopes: Control the evolution of sound over time. ADSR (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) envelopes are available for the VCF, VCA, and a third assignable envelope.
  • LFOs: Add movement and modulation to parameters like pitch, filter, and volume.
  • Effects (FX): The DeepMind 12D includes a powerful multi-effects engine. Use the FX button to access and edit various effects like reverb, delay, chorus, and more.

6.3 Arpeggiator and Sequencer

The built-in arpeggiator and sequencer allow for creating complex rhythmic and melodic patterns.

  • Arpeggiator: Hold down notes and activate the arpeggiator to play them in various patterns. Adjust RATE and GATE TIME.
  • Sequencer: Record and playback sequences of notes and parameter changes.

7. Maintenance

Proper care will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your DeepMind 12D.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the unit in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Ventilation: Ensure ventilation openings are clear of dust and debris.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your DeepMind 12D, refer to the following common problems and solutions.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No sound output.Incorrect audio connections, low volume, or muted patch.Check all audio cables. Ensure the master volume is up. Verify the selected patch is not muted or has extremely low volume settings.
MIDI not responding.Incorrect MIDI connections, wrong MIDI channel, or USB driver issue.Confirm MIDI cables are correctly connected (OUT to IN). Check MIDI channel settings on both the DeepMind 12D and the controlling device. For USB MIDI, ensure the correct drivers are installed on your computer.
Unit freezes or behaves erratically.Software glitch or temporary error.Turn the unit off, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on. If the problem persists, consider performing a factory reset (refer to the advanced manual or Behringer support for instructions).

If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact Behringer customer support.
