Maclean Energy MCE992 Metal Detector User Manual

Model: MCE992 | Brand: Maclean

1. Introduction

The Maclean Energy MCE992 Metal Detector is designed for detecting various metals, including coins, relics, jewelry, gold, and silver. This versatile and user-friendly device allows for efficient searching in diverse environments. Its advanced features, such as metal discrimination, notch function, pinpointing, and adjustable sensitivity, enhance the detection experience. The waterproof search coil enables shallow water exploration.

2. Safety Information

  • This device is intended for users aged 14 and above.
  • Always obtain permission before searching on private property.
  • Avoid searching in areas where unexploded ordnance or dangerous materials might be present.
  • Be aware of your surroundings to prevent accidents, especially near roads, construction sites, or hazardous terrain.
  • Do not use the detector during electrical storms.
  • Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.

3. Package Contents

Please check the package for the following components:

  • Maclean Energy MCE992 Control Box with LCD Display
  • Adjustable Stem
  • 10-inch Waterproof Search Coil
  • Armrest with Strap
  • User Manual

4. Setup

  1. Assembly:
    • Attach the search coil to the lower stem using the provided bolt and nut.
    • Connect the lower stem to the middle stem, and then connect the middle stem to the upper stem (control box assembly). Ensure the coil cable is wound securely around the stem.
    • Attach the armrest to the upper stem.
  2. Battery Installation: The detector requires two 9V alkaline batteries (not included). Open the battery compartment on the control box, insert the batteries according to the polarity indicators, and close the compartment securely.
  3. Adjusting Length: Adjust the stem length to a comfortable position that allows the search coil to be parallel to the ground when sweeping. Secure the adjustment with the locking collar.
  4. Armrest Adjustment: Adjust the armrest for a snug fit to reduce fatigue during extended use.

The control panel features an LCD display, various function buttons, and a volume knob.

5.2 Power On/Off and Volume

  • To turn on the detector, rotate the VOLUME knob clockwise. To turn off, rotate it counter-clockwise until it clicks.
  • Adjust the volume to a comfortable listening level using the VOLUME knob.

5.3 LCD Display Information

The LCD display provides crucial information during detection:

  • Metal Type: Indicates the probable type of metal detected (e.g., IRON, 5¢, P-TAB, 1¢, 25¢).
  • Depth: Shows the approximate depth of the detected object.
  • Position: Helps in pinpointing the exact location.
  • Sensitivity Level (SENS): Displays the current sensitivity setting.
  • Battery Status: Indicates the remaining battery life.
  • Signal: Visual representation of signal strength.

5.4 Discrimination (DISC) Function

The adjustable DISC function allows you to differentiate between ferrous (iron-containing) and non-ferrous objects. This helps in filtering out unwanted junk metal. The detector provides three different audio tones (high, medium, low) assigned to various metal types for audio discrimination.

5.5 Notch Function (NOTCH)

Use the NOTCH function to exclude specific categories of junk metal from your search. This feature allows the detector to ignore certain types of targets, focusing only on desired metals.

5.6 Pinpoint (PP) Function

Once a target is detected, press the PP button to activate the pinpoint function. This helps you to precisely locate the object, making recovery easier.

5.7 Sensitivity (SENS) Adjustment

The SENS function allows you to fine-tune the detector's sensitivity. Adjusting sensitivity can help in detecting smaller objects or objects at greater depths, or reduce false signals in highly mineralized ground.

5.8 Headphone Jack

A 3.5mm headphone jack is integrated for connecting headphones (not included). Using headphones can enhance your ability to hear subtle target signals and conduct more precise searches, especially in noisy environments.

5.9 Searching Techniques

  • Hold the detector with the search coil parallel to the ground, approximately 1-2 inches above the surface.
  • Sweep the coil slowly from side to side in overlapping motions.
  • When a target is indicated, use the pinpoint function to narrow down its exact location.
  • The 10-inch waterproof coil allows for searching in shallow water, but ensure the control box is not submerged as it is not waterproof.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the detector with a damp cloth after each use. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Battery Care: Always remove batteries if the detector will not be used for more than a week to prevent corrosion from battery leakage.
  • Storage: Store the detector in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Coil Care: The search coil is waterproof, but avoid harsh impacts or bending the cable.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Detector does not power onDead or incorrectly installed batteriesReplace batteries with fresh 9V alkaline batteries. Check polarity.
False signals or erratic behaviorHigh sensitivity, electromagnetic interference, highly mineralized groundReduce sensitivity (SENS). Move away from power lines or other electronic devices. Try searching in a different area.
Poor detection depthLow sensitivity, small target, deeply buried objectIncrease sensitivity (SENS). Sweep slower and closer to the ground.
Cannot pinpoint target accuratelyIncorrect pinpointing techniqueEnsure the coil is centered over the target when using the PP function. Practice pinpointing on known targets.
