1. Introduction

The GQ GMC-500Plus is an advanced Geiger Counter designed for detecting nuclear radiation. This device offers real-time data logging, connectivity to the Geiger Counter World Map service for online history and data storage, and various display modes including Graphic, Text, and Large Font. 3. Setup

3.1 Battery Installation and Charging

The GMC-500Plus comes with a pre-installed rechargeable Lithium Metal battery. If the battery needs to be replaced or charged, follow these instructions:

To charge the device, connect the provided USB cable to the unit's USB port and then to a power outlet adapter or a computer's USB port. The battery indicator on the display will blink during charging.

3.2 Initial Power On

Press and hold the power button (S4, typically the top-right button) until the device powers on and displays the GQ GMC-500Plus logo. The device will then proceed to the main measurement screen.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Button Functions

The device features four primary buttons for navigation and control:

  • S1 (Return/Shortcut key): Used to return to the previous menu or as a shortcut for certain functions.
  • S2 & S3 (Up/Down, Change Unit key): Used to navigate menus, adjust settings, or change measurement units.
  • S4 (On/Off, Select, Menu key): Used to power the device on/off, select menu options, or access the main menu.

4.2 Display Modes

The GMC-500Plus offers several display modes to present radiation data. Short press the S1 key (return button) to toggle between these modes:

  • Large Font Mode: Displays current radiation readings in large, easy-to-read characters.
  • Dosimeter Mode: Provides cumulative dose information over time.
  • Text Mode: Shows detailed numerical data including current, average, and maximum readings.
  • Graphic Mode: Presents radiation levels visually over time as a graph.
  • Food/Sample Mode: Designed for timed measurements of specific items.

4.3 Wi-Fi and Data Logging

The GMC-500Plus features Wi-Fi connectivity for advanced data logging and remote monitoring. To access Wi-Fi settings, navigate through the main menu using the S4 button and then S2/S3 for selection.

Once configured, the device can automatically submit radiation data to the Geiger Counter World Map service (www.GMCmap.com) every minute, providing free online history and unlimited data storage. This allows users to monitor readings from anywhere globally.

4.4 Radiation Measurement

The GMC-500Plus measures radiation in Counts Per Minute (CPM), microSieverts per hour (µSv/h), and milliRoentgens per hour (mR/h). The device is highly sensitive and provides rapid responses to radiation sources.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Battery Replacement

The GMC-500Plus uses a rechargeable Lithium Metal battery. If replacement is necessary, ensure the device is powered off. Open the battery compartment on the rear of the unit, carefully remove the old battery, and insert a new one, observing correct polarity. Close the compartment securely. Refer to Video 2 for visual guidance on battery handling.

5.2 Cleaning

To clean the device, use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or abrasive materials, as these can damage the unit's electronics or display. Ensure the device is powered off before cleaning.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Device does not power on: Ensure the battery is correctly installed and fully charged. Connect the device to a power source using the USB cable.
  • Inaccurate readings: Verify that the device is not near any strong electromagnetic interference. Ensure the device is placed in an open area for general background radiation measurements. If using a radioactive sample, ensure it is positioned correctly relative to the sensor.
  • Wi-Fi connection issues: Check your Wi-Fi network settings and ensure the correct SSID and password are entered in the device's Wi-Fi menu. Ensure the device is within range of your Wi-Fi router.
  • No audio alerts: Check the device's volume settings in the menu. Ensure the speaker is not obstructed.
