Setup

Before first use, disassemble the Moka Express and wash all parts with warm water. Do not use soap or detergent. Ensure all parts are completely dry before reassembling.

1. Fill the Lower Chamber: Fill the boiler (lower chamber) with cold or room temperature filtered water up to the level of the safety valve. Do not exceed the valve.

2. Insert the Filter Funnel: Place the filter funnel into the lower chamber.
3. Add Ground Coffee: Fill the filter funnel with finely ground coffee. Do not tamp or press the coffee down. Level the coffee gently.

4. Assemble the Top: Screw the upper chamber firmly onto the lower chamber, ensuring a tight seal. Use the body of the pot for leverage, not the handle.

Operating Instructions

Follow these steps to brew authentic Italian espresso with your Bialetti Moka Express:

1. Place on Stovetop: Place the assembled Moka pot on a stovetop burner. For gas stoves, ensure the flame is smaller than the base of the pot to prevent damage to the handle. For electric stoves, use a burner size appropriate for the pot's base.

2. Heat to Brew: Heat the pot on medium heat. As the water heats, pressure will build, forcing the hot water through the coffee grounds and into the upper chamber.
3. Listen for Gurgling: Coffee will begin to emerge from the center post in the upper chamber. Once you hear a gurgling sound, indicating that the lower chamber is almost empty, turn off the heat.
4. Serve Immediately: Remove the Moka pot from the heat. The residual heat will complete the brewing process. Stir the coffee in the upper chamber before pouring to ensure consistent flavor.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Bialetti Moka Express:

• Cleaning: After each use, rinse the Moka Express thoroughly with clean, warm water.
• Avoid Detergents: Do not use soap, detergents, or abrasive products (like steel wool) for cleaning, as these can damage the aluminum and alter the taste of future brews.
• Dishwasher Safe: The Moka Express is NOT dishwasher safe. Washing in a dishwasher will irremediably damage the pot and affect coffee flavor.
• Drying: Dry all parts thoroughly with a towel after washing. Do not reassemble the product until all parts are completely dry to prevent oxidation and corrosion.
• Storage: Store the Moka pot disassembled or with the top loosely placed to allow air circulation.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Moka Express, consider the following common solutions:

• Coffee Not Brewing or Slow Flow:
  • Ensure the water level is below the safety valve.
  • Check that the coffee grind is not too fine, which can block the filter.
  • Verify that the upper and lower chambers are screwed together tightly to prevent steam leakage.
• Weak or Watery Coffee:
  • The coffee grind might be too coarse, allowing water to pass too quickly.
  • You might not be using enough coffee grounds.
• Bitter or Burnt Taste:
  • The heat source might be too high, causing the coffee to brew too quickly or burn.
  • The coffee grounds might be too finely ground, leading to over-extraction.
  • Remove the pot from heat immediately after the gurgling sound begins.
• Leaking from the Middle:
  • Ensure the upper and lower chambers are screwed together very tightly.
  • Check the rubber gasket and filter plate for proper seating and wear. Replace if necessary.
