Broan-NuTone Glacier BCSD136BL 36-inch Under-Cabinet Range Hood Instruction Manual

Model: BCSD136BL

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient installation, operation, and maintenance of your Broan-NuTone Glacier BCSD136BL 36-inch Under-Cabinet Range Hood. Please read these instructions thoroughly before beginning installation or use.

The Broan-NuTone Glacier range hood is designed to enhance your kitchen environment by effectively removing smoke, cooking odors, and moisture. It features a powerful exhaust fan and integrated lighting to illuminate your cooking area.

2. Important Safety Information

To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons, observe the following:

  • Install this range hood in accordance with all national and local codes.
  • Always disconnect power at the service panel before servicing or cleaning the unit.
  • Ensure proper ventilation is provided for combustion equipment to prevent back-drafting.
  • Do not use this unit with any solid-state speed control device.
  • Clean grease filters frequently. Grease should not be allowed to accumulate on fan or filters.
  • Never leave surface units unattended at high settings. Boil-over causes smoking and greasy spillovers that may ignite.
  • Always use cookware appropriate for the size of the surface element.

3. Product Features

  • 36-inch Under-Cabinet Design: Seamlessly integrates beneath kitchen cabinets, providing both exhaust and lighting.
  • Improved Air Quality: Features the Captur system with a MAX 300 CFM and 5.0 Sones blower, designed to remove 97.4% of smoke and cooking odors efficiently.
  • Integrated Lighting: Two-level built-in lights accommodate up to 50W halogen bulbs (not included) for illuminating the cooking area. Controlled by a hidden rocker switch.
  • Dishwasher-Safe Filters: Dual one-piece open mesh grease filters are easily removable for cleaning, ensuring optimal grease capture.
  • Versatile Installation: Supports 4-way convertible installation options: 3.25" x 10" vertical or horizontal ducting (with damper), 7" round vertical ducting (damper sold separately), or non-ducted with air recirculation (filter sold separately).
  • Safety and Aesthetics: Mitered sides and a hemmed bottom eliminate sharp edges for safety and provide a decorative appearance.

4. Setup and Installation

The Broan-NuTone Glacier range hood is designed for under-cabinet mounting. Proper measurement and preparation are crucial for successful installation.

4.1 Pre-Installation Steps

  1. Measure Carefully: Before purchasing or installing, accurately measure the space under your cabinet to ensure compatibility with the 36-inch unit.
  2. Power Disconnection: Always turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before starting any electrical work.
  3. Remove Old Unit: If replacing an existing range hood, carefully remove it. Note how it was attached (typically four corners) and any existing ductwork.
  4. Prepare Ductwork: Determine your ventilation method (ducted or non-ducted). For ducted installations, ensure the appropriate ducting (3.25" x 10" or 7" round) is ready. For non-ducted, ensure the recirculation filter (sold separately) is available.
  5. Install Light Bulbs: Halogen bulbs (up to 50W, not included) should be installed into the light sockets before mounting the unit.

4.2 Mounting the Range Hood

The range hood typically attaches to the underside of the cabinet. The unit includes slots for easy mounting. Ensure the unit is securely fastened to the cabinet structure.

5. Operating Instructions

The Broan-NuTone Glacier range hood features simple rocker switches for controlling the fan speed and lighting.

5.1 Fan Operation

The fan has two speed settings: Low and High. Locate the rocker switch labeled 'FAN' on the underside of the hood.

  • To activate the fan on Low speed, push the fan switch to the 'LO' position. This setting is suitable for light cooking or maintaining air circulation.
  • To activate the fan on High speed, push the fan switch to the 'HI' position. This setting provides maximum ventilation for heavy cooking, smoke, or strong odors.
  • To turn the fan off, return the switch to the 'OFF' (middle) position.

5.2 Light Operation

The integrated lighting has two levels of brightness. Locate the rocker switch labeled 'LIGHT' on the underside of the hood.

  • To turn on the light at the lower brightness setting, push the light switch to the first 'ON' position.
  • To turn on the light at the higher brightness setting, push the light switch to the second 'ON' position.
  • To turn the light off, return the switch to the 'OFF' position.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your range hood.

6.1 Cleaning Grease Filters

The dual one-piece open mesh grease filters are dishwasher-safe for easy cleaning. Frequent cleaning is recommended to maintain optimum grease capture and prevent fire hazards.

  1. Ensure the range hood is turned off and power is disconnected.
  2. Carefully remove the mesh filters from the underside of the hood.
  3. Place the filters in a dishwasher for cleaning, or wash by hand with warm, soapy water.
  4. Allow filters to dry completely before re-installing.

6.2 Replacing Light Bulbs

The integrated lights use up to 50W halogen bulbs (GU10 base, not included). Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for specific bulb replacement procedures.

  1. Ensure the range hood is turned off and power is disconnected.
  2. Allow bulbs to cool completely before handling.
  3. Carefully remove the old bulb and insert the new halogen bulb.
  4. Reconnect power and test the light function.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your range hood, consult the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • Fan not operating: Check if the power is connected and the circuit breaker is not tripped. Ensure the fan switch is in the 'LO' or 'HI' position.
  • Lights not working: Verify that the light switch is in an 'ON' position. Check if the halogen bulbs are securely installed and not burnt out. Replace bulbs if necessary.
  • Poor suction: Ensure grease filters are clean and not clogged. For ducted installations, check for obstructions in the ductwork. For non-ducted, ensure the recirculation filter is clean and correctly installed.
  • Excessive noise: Check for loose parts or obstructions in the fan blades. Ensure the unit is securely mounted and filters are properly seated.

If problems persist after attempting these steps, contact Broan-NuTone customer support or a qualified service technician.
