Setup

Battery Installation

  1. Unscrew the transducer cap at the bottom of the unit.
  2. Insert one 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  3. Carefully replace the transducer cap, ensuring the O-ring seal is properly seated to maintain waterproofing.

Initial Power On and Unit Selection

  1. Press the power button located on the top of the unit to turn it on.
  2. To change measurement units (e.g., from feet to meters, or Fahrenheit to Celsius), press and hold the power button for approximately 5 seconds. The display will cycle through available units. Release the button when your desired unit is shown.

Operating Instructions

Taking Depth Readings

  1. Ensure the unit is powered on and the desired depth unit (feet or meters) is selected.
  2. Submerge the transducer end of the unit into the water. For accurate readings, hold the unit as vertically as possible.
  3. The depth reading will appear on the LCD screen. The device automatically adjusts to the depth.
  4. Note: The device works best when the transducer is fully submerged and free of air bubbles.

Taking Temperature Readings

  1. Ensure the unit is powered on and the desired temperature unit (Fahrenheit or Celsius) is selected.
  2. For accurate water temperature readings, submerge the transducer end of the unit in the water for 30 seconds to 1 minute to allow the sensor to stabilize.
  3. The temperature reading will be displayed on the LCD screen.

Through-Ice Readings

The HawkEye DT1H can provide depth readings through ice under specific conditions:

  • Black Ice: The device can read through clear, solid ice (often referred to as 'black ice') because sonar travels effectively through it.
  • White Ice: The device cannot read through 'white ice' or ice containing trapped air bubbles, as air interferes with sonar signals.
  • Thick Ice: For very thick ice, it may be necessary to ensure the transducer is positioned below the ice surface (e.g., in a drilled hole) to prevent the sonar signal from being blocked on its return path.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, especially in saltwater, rinse the unit with fresh water to remove any salt or debris. Wipe the unit dry with a soft cloth.
  • Battery: If the unit will not be used for an extended period, remove the 9V battery to prevent leakage and potential damage.
  • Seals: Periodically inspect the O-ring seal on the transducer cap for any signs of wear or damage. Ensure it is clean and properly seated before each use to maintain the unit's waterproof integrity.
  • Storage: Store the unit in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Troubleshooting

  • No Depth Reading:
    • Check if the battery is properly installed and has sufficient charge.
    • Ensure the transducer end is fully submerged in water and held vertically.
    • Verify there are no air bubbles clinging to the transducer face.
    • If reading through ice, ensure it is 'black ice' and not 'white ice' with trapped air.
  • Incorrect Temperature Reading:
    • Allow sufficient time (30-60 seconds) for the sensor to acclimate to the water temperature.
  • Unit Not Changing Measurement Units:
    • Ensure you are pressing and holding the power button for the required 5 seconds to cycle through the unit options.
