5. Setup

5.1 Battery Installation

The Lutron PH-222 requires batteries for operation (not included in the package). To install or replace batteries:

  1. Twist the top cap of the meter counter-clockwise to open the battery compartment.
  2. Insert two 1.5V AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  3. Securely close the battery compartment by twisting the cap clockwise until it is tight to maintain the waterproof seal.

5.2 Electrode Preparation

  1. Carefully remove the protective cap from the bottom of the pH electrode. The cap typically contains a small amount of storage solution to keep the electrode moist.
  2. Rinse the electrode tip with distilled or deionized water to remove any residual storage solution. Gently blot dry with a lint-free tissue. Do not rub the glass bulb.

6. Operation

6.1 Power On/Off

Press the POWER button to turn the meter on or off.

6.2 Taking a Measurement

  1. Ensure the meter is calibrated (refer to Section 7).
  2. Immerse the pH electrode tip into the sample solution, ensuring the glass bulb is fully submerged.
  3. Gently stir the solution to ensure homogeneity and allow the reading to stabilize. The display will show the pH value.
  4. Record the stable pH reading.
  5. After measurement, rinse the electrode with distilled water and replace the protective cap.

6.3 Data Hold Function

To freeze the current reading on the display, press the HOLD button. Press it again to release the hold and return to live measurement.

6.4 Data Logging and Recall

The PH-222 can store up to 100 measurement points. Refer to the detailed operation manual included in the package for specific instructions on how to use the REC button for data logging and recall functions.

7. Calibration

Regular calibration is essential for accurate pH measurements. The Lutron PH-222 supports multi-point calibration using standard buffer solutions. It is recommended to calibrate the meter before each use or if readings appear inaccurate.

7.1 Calibration Procedure (Two-Point)

The PH-222 typically uses a two-point calibration with pH 7.00 and pH 4.00 (or pH 10.00) buffer solutions.

  1. Prepare fresh pH 7.00 and pH 4.00 buffer solutions. Ensure they are at the same temperature as your samples.
  2. Turn on the meter and rinse the electrode with distilled water.
  3. Immerse the electrode into the pH 7.00 buffer solution.
  4. Press and hold the CAL button (often integrated with the REC button, refer to the device's specific button functions) until the calibration mode is activated. The display will typically show 'CAL' or a flashing pH value.
  5. Wait for the reading to stabilize. The meter will automatically recognize the buffer and complete the calibration for pH 7.00.
  6. Rinse the electrode with distilled water.
  7. Immerse the electrode into the pH 4.00 buffer solution.
  8. Repeat the calibration process. The meter will automatically recognize the buffer and complete the calibration for pH 4.00.
  9. Once calibration is complete, the meter will return to measurement mode.

8. Maintenance

8.1 Electrode Care and Storage

  • Always keep the electrode tip moist. Never allow the electrode to dry out. Store it in its protective cap containing a small amount of storage solution (or 3M KCl solution).
  • Rinse the electrode with distilled water after each use to prevent contamination.
  • If the electrode becomes dirty or fouled, clean it gently according to the instructions in the full operation manual.
  • Replace the electrode when it no longer calibrates correctly or provides stable readings.

8.2 General Cleaning

Wipe the meter body with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.

8.3 Battery Replacement

Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display or if the meter fails to power on. Refer to Section 5.1 for battery installation instructions.

9. Troubleshooting
