Setup
- Unfold the Gameboard: Place the gameboard on a flat surface.
- Separate Cards: Separate the Chance cards and Community Chest cards. Shuffle each deck and place them face down on their designated spaces on the gameboard.
- Banker Selection: Each player rolls the two standard dice. The player with the highest total becomes the Banker. The Banker is responsible for the Bank's money, Title Deed cards, Houses, and Hotels. The Banker may also play, but must keep their personal money separate from the Bank's.
-
Initial Money Distribution: The Banker gives each player $1500 in the following denominations:
- Two $500 bills
- Two $100 bills
- Two $50 bills
- Six $20 bills
- Five $10 bills
- Five $5 bills
- Five $1 bills
- Choose Tokens: Each player selects one of the 8 tokens and places it on the "GO" space.
- Title Deeds, Houses, and Hotels: Place the Title Deed cards next to their corresponding properties on the board. Place the Houses and Hotels near the board.

Operating: How to Play
Standard Gameplay Overview
The objective of Monopoly is to be the last player remaining with money, having bankrupted all opponents. Players take turns rolling dice to move their tokens around the game board, buying and trading properties, and developing them with houses and hotels. Rent is collected from opponents who land on owned properties.
- Starting the Game: The player to the left of the Banker goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.
- Player's Turn: On your turn, roll the two standard dice (and the Speed Die, if using). Move your token clockwise the number of spaces indicated by the sum of the standard dice.
-
Landing on Spaces:
- Unowned Property: You may buy the property for the price printed on the board. If you decline, the property is auctioned by the Banker to the highest bidder.
- Owned Property: If another player owns the property, you must pay them rent as indicated on their Title Deed card.
- Chance or Community Chest: Draw the top card from the respective deck and follow its instructions.
- Tax Spaces: Pay the indicated tax to the Bank.
- Go to Jail: Move your token directly to the "In Jail" space. Your turn ends.
- Free Parking: This is a safe space; no action is required.
- Go: Passing or landing on "GO" collects $200 from the Bank.
- Building: Once you own all properties in a color group, you can build houses and then hotels on them. Buildings must be erected evenly across the properties in a group.
- Mortgaging: If you need money, you can mortgage properties. Mortgaged properties do not collect rent.
- Bankruptcy: If you owe more money than you can pay, even after selling all your buildings and mortgaging all your properties, you are bankrupt and out of the game.
Using the Speed Die
The Speed Die is an optional component designed to accelerate gameplay. Once all players have passed "GO" at least once, you may choose to incorporate the Speed Die into your rolls.
When using the Speed Die, roll all three dice (two standard dice and the Speed Die) on your turn.
- Numbered Sides (1, 2, 3): If the Speed Die shows a 1, 2, or 3, add this number to the total of the two standard dice. Move your token the combined total.
- "Bus" Icon: If the Speed Die shows the "Bus" icon, you can choose to move the sum of the two standard dice, or you can choose to move the value of one standard die and then the value of the other standard die. This allows you to potentially land on two different spaces in one turn. If you land on an unowned property with the first die, you can buy it before moving the second die.
- "Mr. Monopoly" Icon: If the Speed Die shows the "Mr. Monopoly" icon, first move your token the sum of the two standard dice. After completing any action on that space (e.g., buying property, paying rent), you then move your token to the next unowned property on the board. If all properties are owned, you move to the next property on which you would owe rent. You do not collect $200 for passing "GO" during this second move.
If you roll doubles on the two standard dice, you still take another turn, even if the Speed Die shows a "Bus" or "Mr. Monopoly" icon. If you roll triples (all three dice show the same number), you can move to any space on the board.

Maintenance
To ensure the longevity of your Monopoly Speed Die Edition game, follow these maintenance guidelines:
- Storage: Store all game components in their original box in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Cleaning: Wipe the gameboard and plastic components with a soft, dry cloth if needed. Do not use abrasive cleaners or liquids.
- Handling: Handle cards and money carefully to prevent bending or tearing.
Troubleshooting
- Game is too long: Utilize the Speed Die as described in the "Using the Speed Die" section. This can significantly reduce game duration. Ensure all players understand the rules for buying and auctioning properties to keep the game moving.
- Missing components: Refer to the "What's in the Box" section to verify all components. If any are missing, contact Hasbro Gaming customer support.
- Disputes over rules: Refer to this instruction manual for clarification. For complex scenarios not covered, a consensus among players or a quick online search for official Monopoly rules may be necessary.
