Setup Instructions

  1. Unpack and Inspect: Carefully remove all components from the packaging and inspect them for any damage.
  2. Assemble Intake Tube: Connect the extendable lift tube to the main filter body. Attach the intake strainer to the bottom of the lift tube. If desired, attach the oil skimmer to the intake tube.
  3. Install Filter Media: Open the filter media container. Place the sponge, activated carbon, and bio-balls into their designated compartments within the filter unit. Ensure they are seated correctly.
  4. Position Filter: Hang the filter unit securely on the rim of your aquarium. Ensure the intake tube is fully submerged in the aquarium water and the filter body is level.
  5. Prime the Filter: Before plugging in, manually fill the filter chamber with aquarium water until it is full. This helps to initiate water flow and prevent dry running of the motor.
  6. Connect Power: Plug the power cord into a suitable electrical outlet. Ensure a drip loop is formed to prevent water from traveling along the cord to the outlet.

Operating Instructions

  • Once plugged in and primed, the filter should begin drawing water and discharging filtered water back into the aquarium.
  • Ensure the water level in your aquarium is always above the minimum intake level of the filter to prevent the motor from running dry.
  • Monitor the water flow from the output nozzle. A strong, consistent flow indicates proper operation.
  • Some models may feature an adjustable flow control. Refer to the diagram on the packaging for its location and operation to maximize or minimize flow output as needed.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal filter performance and water quality.

  1. Weekly Cleaning (Sponge): Disconnect power. Remove the filter sponge and gently rinse it in a bucket of old aquarium water (removed during a water change). Avoid rinsing with tap water as chlorine can kill beneficial bacteria.
  2. Monthly Cleaning (Impeller & Housing): Disconnect power. Carefully remove the impeller from the motor housing. Clean the impeller and its chamber with a small brush to remove any debris or mineral buildup.
  3. Media Replacement (Activated Carbon): Activated carbon loses its effectiveness over time. Replace the activated carbon media every 2-4 weeks, or as recommended by the media manufacturer.
  4. Bio-balls: Bio-balls rarely need cleaning. If they appear excessively dirty, gently rinse them in old aquarium water to preserve beneficial bacteria.
  5. Intake Tube & Skimmer: Periodically clean the intake tube and oil skimmer to ensure unobstructed water flow.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Filter not starting or no water flow after power cut. Loss of prime (air in the filter chamber). Disconnect power, manually fill the filter chamber with aquarium water until full, then reconnect power.
Reduced water flow. Clogged intake strainer, dirty filter media, or obstructed impeller. Disconnect power. Clean the intake strainer, rinse filter sponge, and inspect/clean the impeller and its chamber.
Noisy operation. Debris in impeller, worn impeller, or improper seating of components. Disconnect power. Clean the impeller and its shaft. Ensure all components are correctly assembled and seated.
Water not clear. Filter media is saturated or ineffective, or filter is undersized for the aquarium. Clean or replace filter media as necessary. Ensure regular water changes are performed.
