Setup
Unpacking and Initial Placement
Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Ensure you have the Roomba 690 robot vacuum, Home Base charging station, line cord, one Dual Mode Virtual Wall Barrier (with 2 AA batteries included), an extra filter, and a flat cleaning tool.
Place the Home Base charging station against a wall in an open, uncluttered area, ensuring at least 1.5 feet (0.5 meters) of clear space on each side and 4 feet (1.2 meters) in front. Plug in the Home Base.
Charging the Robot
Place your Roomba onto the Home Base, ensuring the metal charging contacts on the robot align with those on the Home Base. The battery indicator will pulse amber while charging. A full charge takes approximately 3 hours. The robot is fully charged when the indicator turns solid green. The Roomba 690 runs for up to 90 minutes before automatically docking and recharging.
Connecting to Wi-Fi and App Setup
Download the iRobot Home app from your mobile device's app store. The app is compatible with iPhone (iOS 11 or higher) and Android (OS 5.0 or higher). Follow the in-app instructions to connect your Roomba 690 to your home Wi-Fi network. This enables remote control, scheduling, and access to additional features.

Using the Dual Mode Virtual Wall Barrier
The included Dual Mode Virtual Wall Barrier creates an invisible barrier that Roomba will not cross. This is useful for keeping Roomba in specific rooms or away from delicate items. Insert the two AA batteries into the barrier. You can set it to Virtual Wall Mode (straight line barrier) or Halo Mode (circular barrier) depending on your needs.
Operating the Roomba 690
Starting a Cleaning Cycle
- Manual Start: Press the large CLEAN button on top of the robot.
- iRobot Home App: Open the app and press the 'CLEAN' button. You can also schedule cleaning times for automatic operation.
- Voice Control: The Roomba 690 is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Use voice commands to start, stop, or dock your robot.
Cleaning Technology
The Roomba 690 utilizes a patented 3-stage cleaning system that works to loosen, lift, and suction dirt from your floors. Dual Multi-Surface Brushes are designed to handle everything from small particles to large debris. Dirt Detect sensors identify concentrated areas of dirt, prompting the robot to clean more thoroughly in those spots. A full suite of intelligent sensors guides the robot under and around furniture, ensuring comprehensive coverage of your floors.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the optimal performance of your Roomba 690. The frequency of cleaning depends on your usage and home environment.
Emptying the Dust Bin
Empty the dust bin after each cleaning cycle, or when the full bin indicator illuminates. Press the bin release button and slide out the bin. Open the bin door and discard debris.
Cleaning the Filter
The Roomba 690 uses a Disk type filter. Remove the filter from the dust bin and tap it against a trash can to remove debris. Do not wash the filter. Replace the filter every 2-3 months, or more often if you have pets.
Cleaning Brushes and Wheels
Periodically remove and clean the Multi-Surface Brushes and the side brush. Use the included cleaning tool to remove hair and debris wrapped around the brushes. Also, check and clean the front caster wheel and drive wheels to ensure smooth movement.
Cleaning Sensors and Charging Contacts
Wipe the robot's sensors (cliff sensors, wall-following sensor) and charging contacts with a clean, dry cloth to maintain proper navigation and charging capabilities.
Troubleshooting
If your Roomba 690 encounters an issue, the robot may play an audible alert and the CLEAN button will flash. Consult the iRobot Home app for specific error messages and troubleshooting steps.
- Robot not charging: Ensure the Home Base is plugged in and the charging contacts on both the robot and Home Base are clean.
- Robot getting stuck frequently: Clear obstacles from the cleaning area. Use the Virtual Wall Barrier to block off problematic zones. Clean the wheels and brushes to ensure they are free of debris.
- Poor cleaning performance: Empty the dust bin, clean or replace the filter, and clean the Multi-Surface Brushes and side brush.
- Wi-Fi connectivity issues: Ensure your Wi-Fi router is on and within range. Restart your robot and try reconnecting through the iRobot Home app.
