2. Setup
2.1 Attaching the Lens
To attach the lens to your Canon EF mount camera, align the red dot on the lens barrel with the red dot on your camera's lens mount. Rotate the lens clockwise until it clicks securely into place. Ensure the lens is firmly attached before use.

2.2 Attaching the Lens Hood
The included lens hood helps to block stray light, reducing flare and ghosting, and provides physical protection for the front element. Align the lens hood with the front of the lens and twist until it locks into position. The lens hood can be reversed for compact storage.

2.3 Filter Attachment
This lens uses a 67mm filter size. To attach a filter, carefully screw it onto the filter threads at the front of the lens. Do not overtighten.
3. Operating the Lens
3.1 Zooming
The Sigma 100-400mm lens features a dual-action zoom mechanism: a traditional rotating zoom ring and a push/pull action. You can rotate the zoom ring to adjust the focal length or push/pull the front of the lens barrel for rapid adjustments. The zoom ring also has a 'Smooth/Tight' switch to adjust the tension of the zoom mechanism.

3.2 Focus Modes (AF/MF)
A switch on the side of the lens allows you to select between Autofocus (AF) and Manual Focus (MF). In AF mode, the Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) provides fast, quiet, and accurate focusing. In MF mode, you can manually adjust focus using the focus ring.
3.3 Optical Stabilizer (OS)
The Optical Stabilizer (OS) function helps to minimize camera shake, especially at longer focal lengths or slower shutter speeds. Use the OS ON/OFF switch to activate or deactivate the stabilization. The lens also offers multiple stabilizer modes (Mode 1, Mode 2, Mode 3) for different shooting scenarios, such as general shooting, panning, or dynamic action.

3.4 Macro Feature
This lens offers a 1:3.8 macro feature, allowing you to capture detailed close-up shots. This is particularly useful for subjects like flowers, insects, or small objects, providing versatility beyond typical telephoto applications.
4. Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Sigma lens, follow these maintenance guidelines:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, lint-free cloth and a lens cleaning solution specifically designed for optical surfaces. Avoid touching the glass elements directly with your fingers.
- Storage: Store the lens in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Use the front and rear lens caps to protect the elements from dust and scratches.
- Handling: Always handle the lens carefully. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong impacts.
- Moisture: While the lens has some weather resistance, avoid exposing it to heavy rain or excessive moisture. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately with a clean cloth.
5. Troubleshooting
If you encounter any issues with your Sigma 100-400mm lens, consider the following:
- Focusing Issues: Ensure the AF/MF switch is set to the desired mode. Check if the focus limiter switch is set appropriately for your shooting distance. Clean the lens contacts on both the lens and camera body.
- Blurry Images: Verify that the Optical Stabilizer (OS) is engaged if shooting handheld, especially at longer focal lengths. Check your shutter speed and aperture settings. Ensure the lens is clean and free from smudges.
- Lens Not Attaching: Ensure the red dots on the lens and camera body are perfectly aligned before twisting. Do not force the lens.
- Unusual Noises: If you hear unusual noises during operation, especially from the autofocus motor, discontinue use and contact Sigma customer support.
