1. Introduction

3. Setup Guide

3.1 Unpacking and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Verify that the following items are present:

  • Atomos Ninja Flame Unit
  • Master Caddy II
  • 12V 3A AC Power Supply
  • Travel Case (if included in your specific package)

Inspect the unit for any visible damage. If any components are missing or damaged, contact your retailer or Atomos support immediately.

3.2 Powering the Device

The Ninja Flame can be powered using the included 12V 3A AC Power Supply or NP-F-Series batteries (not included). For extended use, AC power is recommended.

  1. AC Power: Connect the 12V 3A AC Power Supply to the DC IN port on the unit and then to a power outlet.
  2. Battery Power: Attach compatible NP-F-Series batteries to the battery slots on the rear of the unit. Ensure they are securely latched.

3.3 Installing Recording Media

The Ninja Flame records to 2.5" SSD (SATA III) drives. A Master Caddy II is provided for mounting the SSD.

  1. Insert a compatible 2.5" SSD into the Master Caddy II.
  2. Slide the loaded Master Caddy II into the drive slot on the side of the Ninja Flame until it clicks into place.

3.4 Connecting Video and Audio Sources

Use HDMI cables to connect your camera and external monitoring devices.

  • HDMI Input: Connect an HDMI cable from your camera's HDMI output to the HDMI 1.4b (Type-A) Input port on the Ninja Flame.
  • HDMI Output: For external monitoring, connect an HDMI cable from the HDMI 1.4b (Type-A) Output port to a monitor or projector.
  • Audio Input: Connect an external microphone or line-level audio source to the 3.5mm Mic/Line Input.
  • Headphone Output: Connect headphones to the 3.5mm Headphone Output for audio monitoring.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Powering On/Off

Press and hold the power button located on the side of the unit to turn the Ninja Flame on or off. The touchscreen will illuminate upon startup.

4.2 Navigating the Touchscreen Interface

The Ninja Flame features a touch-sensitive display for all controls. Tap icons to access menus, adjust settings, and initiate recording. Swipe gestures may be used for certain functions.

4.3 Recording Video

  1. Ensure your camera is connected via HDMI and outputting a supported video signal.
  2. Verify that a formatted SSD is inserted into the unit.
  3. On the touchscreen, select your desired recording codec (ProRes, DNxHR) and resolution/frame rate settings.
  4. Press the Record button (typically a red circle icon) on the touchscreen to begin recording.
  5. Press the Stop button (typically a square icon) to end recording.

Note: The Ninja Flame supports various frame rates including 4K UHD (24/25/30p), 1080i (50/60i), and 1080p (24/25/30/50/60/100/120p).

4.4 Monitoring Features

The Ninja Flame offers advanced monitoring tools:

  • HDR Monitoring: Activate HDR mode for accurate display of Log footage.
  • Waveform, Vectorscope, False Color: Utilize these tools for precise exposure and color analysis.
  • Focus Peaking: Assists in achieving critical focus.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning the Unit

To clean the display and body, use a soft, lint-free cloth. For stubborn marks, slightly dampen the cloth with water or a mild, non-abrasive screen cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.

5.2 Firmware Updates

Periodically check the Atomos website for firmware updates. Updates can improve performance, add features, and resolve known issues. Follow the instructions provided by Atomos for safe firmware installation.

5.3 Storage

  • Audio Problems (especially with Nikon cameras): Some users have reported intermittent audio issues when recording from Nikon cameras. Ensure firmware is up to date. If issues persist, contact Atomos support.
  • Fixed Red Pixel on Display: A fixed red pixel may indicate a manufacturing defect. If this significantly impacts usability, contact Atomos support for assistance.
