3. Setup

3.2 Filling the Water Tank
- Ensure the appliance is unplugged from the mains.
- Remove the water tank from the base unit.
- Fill the tank with clean tap water up to the 'MAX' level indicator. For areas with hard water, a mixture of 50% tap water and 50% demineralized water is recommended. Do not use scented water, water from tumble dryers, or chemically descaled water.
- Replace the water tank securely into the base unit.
3.3 First Use Procedure
During the first few uses, a harmless odor and a small amount of smoke may be produced. This is normal and will disappear quickly.
- Plug the power cord into an earthed electrical outlet.
- Press the ON/OFF button on the control panel. The indicator light will illuminate.
- Allow approximately 2 minutes for the iron to heat up. The steam ready indicator light will stop flashing and remain solid when ready.
- For the first use, press the steam trigger several times while ironing an old cloth to prime the system and remove any manufacturing residues.
4. Operating the Iron

4.1 Temperature Settings
- Adjust the temperature dial on the iron unit according to the fabric type. Always check the garment's care label.
- Start with lower temperatures for delicate fabrics and increase for heavier materials.
4.2 Steam Settings
The control panel on the base allows you to select steam output:
- ECO Mode: Reduces energy consumption while providing sufficient steam for most fabrics. Press the 'ECO' button to activate.
- MAX Mode: Provides maximum steam output for stubborn creases and thicker fabrics. Press the 'MAX' button to activate.
- Steam Trigger: Press and hold the trigger under the iron handle to release continuous steam. Release to stop.
- Steam Boost (Shot of Steam): For very difficult creases, press the steam trigger fully and quickly. This delivers a powerful burst of steam (up to 200 g/min).

4.3 Vertical Steaming
The vertical steam function is ideal for refreshing hanging garments, curtains, or delicate fabrics.
- Hang the garment on a hanger.
- Set the iron to a high temperature.
- Hold the iron vertically a few centimeters away from the fabric and press the steam trigger.
- Move the iron up and down over the garment.
4.4 After Ironing
- Press the ON/OFF button to turn off the appliance.
- Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
- Allow the iron to cool down completely before emptying the water tank and storing.
- Lock the iron onto its base using the locking system for safe transport and storage.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your steam generator iron.
5.1 Cleaning the Soleplate
- Once the iron has cooled down, wipe the soleplate with a damp cloth or a non-abrasive sponge.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or metallic scouring pads, as these can damage the soleplate.
5.2 Descaling (Anti-Calc System)
The Rowenta VR7040 is equipped with an anti-calc cartridge system to prevent limescale buildup. The 'anti-calc' indicator light on the control panel will illuminate when the cartridge needs to be replaced.
- Ensure the appliance is unplugged and completely cool.
- Locate the anti-calc cartridge slot, usually on the side or front of the base unit.
- Remove the old cartridge by pulling it out.
- Insert a new Rowenta anti-calc cartridge, ensuring it clicks into place.
- Plug in the appliance and press the 'RESET' button on the control panel to reset the anti-calc indicator.
5.3 Storage
- Always empty the water tank after each use.
- Wrap the steam hose and power cord neatly around the designated storage areas on the base.
- Store the iron on its base in a safe, dry place, out of reach of children.
