- Screwdriver (Phillips head)
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Pencil
- Wood clamp and scrap wood (recommended to prevent paint chipping)
Installation Steps
This lock assembly is designed to be installed on the left side operating panel when viewed from the outside of the house.
- Prepare the Door: Carefully examine the existing door panel where the lock will be installed. Ensure the area is clean and free of debris.
- Mark Drilling Locations: Using the lock assembly as a template, accurately mark the locations for drilling pilot holes and the main cylinder hole on the exterior of the door panel. Double-check measurements to ensure proper alignment with the interior latch mechanism.
- Drill Holes: Before drilling, it is highly recommended to clamp a piece of scrap wood to the outside of the door panel at the drilling location. This helps prevent the paint from chipping as the drill bit exits the material. Drill pilot holes and the larger hole for the lock cylinder as marked.
- Install Lock Cylinder: Insert the exterior key lock cylinder into the prepared hole. Ensure it seats properly. Important: Avoid turning the cylinder prior to installation, as this may cause the unit to malfunction.
- Secure the Assembly: Align the exterior lock assembly with the drilled holes and the interior latch mechanism. Secure the assembly using the provided mounting screws. Do not overtighten.
- Test Operation: Insert a key and test the locking and unlocking mechanism from the outside. Verify that the lock engages and disengages smoothly.
- Check Interior Latch Compatibility: For older sliding doors, ensure the existing interior thumb latch is long enough to properly engage with the new exterior key lock. If the interior latch is not 1 3/8 inches, a compatible Tribeca interior latch may be required for optimal function.

Operating Instructions
To operate the Andersen Tribeca exterior key lock assembly:
- To Lock: Insert the key into the keyhole on the exterior lock. Turn the key clockwise until the lock mechanism engages and the door is secured. Remove the key.
- To Unlock: Insert the key into the keyhole. Turn the key counter-clockwise until the lock mechanism disengages. The key may need to be turned a full rotation to be removed.
- The door can still be locked and unlocked from the interior using the existing thumb latch.
Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and smooth operation of your lock assembly:
- Cleaning: Clean the exterior surface of the lock with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish.
- Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of graphite lubricant or a silicone-based spray specifically designed for locks into the keyhole to maintain smooth key operation.
- Weather Sealing: If your door is exposed to the elements, consider applying a small amount of silicone sealant around the edges of the lock plate after installation to prevent moisture intrusion.
Troubleshooting
- Lock Not Engaging/Disengaging Smoothly:
- Check for obstructions in the door track or frame.
- Ensure the mounting screws are not overtightened, which can cause binding.
- Verify that the interior thumb latch is correctly aligned and engaging with the exterior lock mechanism. An older or incompatible interior latch (not 1 3/8 inches) may need replacement. - Key Difficult to Insert or Turn:
- Apply a graphite or silicone-based lock lubricant into the keyhole.
- Ensure the key is fully inserted before turning.
- Check if the lock cylinder was turned prior to installation; this can cause misalignment. - Paint Chipping During Drilling:
- This can occur if a scrap wood block was not clamped to the exterior of the door during drilling. While not repairable by this manual, future installations should follow this recommendation.
