1. Introduction

The Icon iKeyboard 6X is a versatile 61-key MIDI keyboard controller integrated with a single-channel Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) controller. Designed for musicians and producers, it features semi-weighted keys for a realistic piano feel and robust metal construction. This manual provides essential information for setting up, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting your iKeyboard 6X.

The iKeyboard 6X offers comprehensive control over your music production environment, including pitch bend and modulation wheels, octave and transpose buttons, and a dedicated controller section with a touch fader, transport controls, and a rotary encoder. It supports Mackie Control and HUI protocols, ensuring broad compatibility with popular DAWs such as Cubase, Nuendo, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Samplitude, and Studio One.

2. Safety Information

  • Power Source: Use only the specified power source (USB bus power or optional external power adapter). Ensure the voltage matches the device requirements.
  • Water and Moisture: Do not expose the unit to rain, moisture, or excessive humidity. Keep liquids away from the device.
  • Heat: Avoid placing the unit near heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other heat-producing appliances.

4.1 Front Panel Controls

  • 61 Semi-Weighted Keys: Full-sized keys designed to provide a realistic piano action.
  • Pitch Bend Wheel: Used to smoothly vary the pitch of notes.
  • Modulation Wheel: Used to add vibrato or other effects to notes.
  • Octave Up/Down Buttons: Shift the keyboard's octave range.
  • Transpose Up/Down Buttons: Shift the keyboard's pitch in semitone increments.
  • Backlit LED Touch Fader: Controls and automates levels and other parameters within your DAW. Reacts in real-time and synchronizes with channel values.
  • Mute, Solo, Rec Buttons: Standard DAW control functions for individual tracks.
  • Track/Bank Selection Buttons: Navigate between tracks and banks in your DAW.
  • Transport Controls: Dedicated buttons for Play, Record, Stop, Loop, and automation modes.
  • Large Rotary Encoder with LED Ring: Multi-purpose knob for panning, setting send levels, controlling plugin parameters, and more.

4.2 Rear Panel Connections

  • USB Port: Connects the iKeyboard 6X to your computer for MIDI communication and power.
  • DC Power Input: For connecting an optional external power adapter (not included) if USB bus power is insufficient or not desired.
  • Sustain Pedal Input: For connecting an optional sustain pedal.
  • Expression Pedal Input: For connecting an optional expression pedal.
  • MIDI Out Port: For connecting to external MIDI hardware.

5. Setup

5.1 Connecting to Your Computer

  1. Ensure your computer is powered on.
  2. Connect one end of the supplied USB cable to the USB port on the rear of the iKeyboard 6X.
  3. Connect the other end of the USB cable to an available USB port on your computer.
  4. The iKeyboard 6X is class-compliant and should be automatically recognized by macOS (Big Sur M1 and Intel compatible) and Windows (10, 8/7, 32 & 64-bit) without the need for additional drivers.
  5. If your computer's USB port does not provide sufficient power, or if you prefer, connect an optional 9V DC power adapter (not included) to the DC Power Input.

5.2 Software Installation and DAW Setup

  1. iMap Software: Download the iMap software from the official ICON website. This software allows for custom mapping of controls and advanced configuration. Install it according to the on-screen instructions.
  2. DAW Configuration: Open your preferred Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).
  3. Navigate to your DAW's preferences or settings menu (e.g., MIDI Setup, Control Surfaces, External Devices).
  4. Select the Icon iKeyboard 6X as a MIDI input device.
  5. For DAW control functionality, configure the iKeyboard 6X as a Mackie Control or HUI compatible device. Many DAWs have built-in presets for these protocols.
  6. Refer to your DAW's documentation for specific instructions on setting up MIDI controllers and control surfaces.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Basic Keyboard Functions

  • Playing Notes: Once connected and configured in your DAW, pressing the keys will trigger notes in your virtual instruments or software synthesizers.
  • Pitch Bend Wheel: Move the wheel up or down to bend the pitch of sustained notes. It typically returns to the center position when released.
  • Modulation Wheel: Move the wheel to apply modulation effects (e.g., vibrato, tremolo) to your sounds. The effect varies depending on the instrument or patch.
