2.2 Tuning the Guitar
The JV60-TBM is equipped with locking tuning machines for stable tuning. To tune your guitar:
- Attach a digital tuner to the headstock or use a pedal tuner.
- Pluck each string individually, starting from the low E string.
- Adjust the corresponding tuning machine until the tuner indicates the correct pitch (E-A-D-G-B-e).
- The locking tuners help maintain tuning stability, especially during aggressive playing.
2.3 Connecting to an Amplifier
To hear your guitar, connect it to an amplifier using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable. Ensure both the guitar's volume knob and the amplifier's volume are set to a low level before powering on the amplifier to prevent sudden loud noises.
3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Controls Overview
The James Valentine Signature Guitar features intuitive controls for shaping your tone:
- Volume Knob: Controls the overall output level of the guitar. It also features a 12dB "Push-Push" active boost. Push the knob to engage the boost for increased volume and saturation, and push again to disengage.
- Tone Knob: Adjusts the treble frequencies, allowing you to brighten or darken your sound.
- 3-Way Pickup Selector: Switches between the neck pickup, bridge pickup, or both.

3.2 Pickup Configuration
The guitar is equipped with two Sterling by Music Man designed pickups:
- Neck Pickup: A single-coil pickup, ideal for clean, bright, and articulate tones.
- Bridge Pickup: A humbucker pickup, providing a fuller, warmer, and higher output sound, suitable for distorted tones and lead playing.
Experiment with the 3-way selector to find the desired tonal characteristics for your playing style.
3.3 Active Boost Feature
The 12dB "Push-Push" active boost on the Volume Control provides an instant increase in output, useful for solos or pushing your amplifier into overdrive. This feature requires a 9V battery, located in the battery compartment on the back of the guitar body.

4. Maintenance
4.1 Cleaning
Regular cleaning will preserve the finish and playability of your guitar:
- Wipe down the body, neck, and strings with a clean, soft microfiber cloth after each use to remove sweat and oils.
- For a deeper clean, use a guitar-specific polish or cleaner on the body. Avoid harsh chemicals.
- Clean the fretboard periodically with a lemon oil or fretboard conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
4.2 String Replacement
Strings should be replaced regularly to maintain optimal tone and playability. The guitar comes equipped with Ernie Ball strings. When replacing strings:
- Loosen the old strings and remove them.
- Thread new strings through the string-through body bridge.
- Insert the string into the locking tuner post and tighten the locking mechanism.
- Wind the string a few times around the post and tune to pitch.
4.3 Fretboard Care
The Roasted Maple neck and fretboard are durable but benefit from proper care. Keep the fretboard clean and moisturized, especially in dry climates, to prevent shrinkage and fret sprout.
4.4 Battery Replacement (for Active Boost)
If the active boost feature (12dB "Push-Push" on the Volume Control) stops working or sounds weak, it may be time to replace the 9V battery. The battery compartment is located on the back of the guitar body. Use a Lithium Ion 9V battery for best performance.
