Installation

Before You Begin: Ensure the power to the circuit is OFF at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Verify power is off using a voltage tester.

Tools You May Need:

  • Screwdriver (Phillips and/or Flathead)
  • Wire Strippers
  • Electrical Tape
  • Voltage Tester

Wiring Instructions:

  1. Turn Off Power: Locate the circuit breaker or fuse that controls the switch you are replacing or the area where you are installing the new switch. Turn it OFF.
  2. Remove Old Switch (if applicable): Carefully remove the wall plate and unscrew the old switch from the electrical box. Disconnect the wires, noting which wire was connected to which terminal.
  3. Identify Wires: In a single-pole switch installation, you will typically find:
    • LINE (Hot) Wire: Carries power from the circuit breaker.
    • LOAD Wire: Carries power to the light fixture.
    • GROUND Wire: Bare copper or green insulated wire.
  4. Prepare Wires: If necessary, strip approximately 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires.
  5. Connect Ground Wire: Connect the bare copper or green insulated GROUND wire from the electrical box to the GREEN ground screw terminal on the Leviton switch. Tighten securely.
  6. Connect Line and Load Wires: The Leviton 5611-2WS switch has two brass-colored screw terminals and Quickwire push-in terminals.
    • Screw Terminals: Loosen the brass screw terminals. Loop the LINE and LOAD wires clockwise around the screws and tighten firmly. It does not matter which brass terminal the LINE or LOAD wire is connected to for a single-pole switch. These terminals accept 12 and 14 gauge conductors.
    • Quickwire Push-in Terminals: For 14 gauge solid copper wire only. Insert the stripped end of the LINE and LOAD wires firmly into the Quickwire holes until resistance is felt. Ensure the wire is fully seated.

Important: Do not use Quickwire terminals with stranded wire or wire gauges other than 14 AWG. For 12 AWG wire, use the screw terminals.

  7. Secure Switch: Carefully fold the wires into the electrical box. Mount the switch to the electrical box using the provided screws.
  8. Install Wall Plate: Attach the Decora wall plate (sold separately) over the switch.
  9. Restore Power: Turn the power back ON at the circuit breaker or fuse box.

Maintenance
