Shure ULXD4Q Quad Channel Digital Wireless Receiver Instruction Manual

Model: ULXD4Q - V50 Band (174-216MHz)

1. Overview

The Shure ULXD4Q is a quad-channel digital wireless receiver designed for professional audio applications. It provides four channels of high-quality audio, robust RF signal stability, and advanced setup features within a compact single rack unit. This receiver is part of the ULX-D Digital Wireless Microphone Systems and requires compatible ULX-D transmitters for operation. The V50 band operates within the 174-216MHz frequency range.

Key Features:

  • Uncompromising Audio Quality: Features 24-bit digital audio and a wide frequency response for clear and accurate sound reproduction.
  • RF Signal Stability: Designed for reliable performance in challenging RF environments, supporting up to 47 systems simultaneously within 6 MHz.
  • Advanced Networking: Includes Dante digital audio networking for multiple audio channels over a single Ethernet cable, and compatibility with Wireless Workbench, SystemOn, and ShurePlus Channels apps for monitoring and control.
  • Secure Communication: AES-256 encryption ensures confidentiality for sensitive transmissions.
  • Space-Efficient Design: A 1RU all-metal chassis houses four independent receivers, optimizing rack space.
  • Flexible Routing: Each channel features individual audio and RF meters, gain control, and XLR outputs that can be configured as direct or summed.

2. Setup

2.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully unpack the ULXD4Q receiver and inspect it for any signs of damage. Retain all packaging materials for future transport or storage.

2.2 Component Compatibility

The ULXD4Q receiver requires a compatible Shure ULX-D transmitter (sold separately) to form a complete wireless system. Ensure that the frequency band of your transmitter matches the V50 band (174-216MHz) of this receiver for proper operation.

2.3 Rack Mounting

The ULXD4Q is designed for standard 19-inch rack mounting. Secure the unit using appropriate rack screws. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit to prevent overheating.

2.4 Connections

Figure 2: Rear panel of the Shure ULXD4Q receiver, showing power input, antenna connections, XLR outputs, and Ethernet ports.

  • Power: Connect the supplied AC power cord to the IEC inlet on the rear panel and to a suitable power outlet.
  • Antennas: Attach the supplied antennas to the BNC connectors labeled 'Antenna A' and 'Antenna B'. For optimal performance, position antennas away from metal objects and other RF sources.
  • Audio Outputs: Connect the XLR outputs (Output 1-4) to your mixing console or audio interface. Each output corresponds to a specific receiver channel.
  • Network (Optional): For networked audio applications (Dante) or remote control, connect an Ethernet cable from the 'Primary' or 'Secondary' Ethernet port to your network switch.
  • RF Cascade (Optional): Use the RF cascade outputs to share RF signal with other ULX-D receivers, simplifying frequency coordination in multi-system setups.

2.5 Initial Power-Up

After making all necessary connections, power on the receiver using the front panel power switch. The display will illuminate, and the unit will perform a self-test.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Front Panel Controls

The front panel provides access to all essential controls and monitoring features:

  • Control Knob: Used for navigating menus and adjusting settings. Press to select, rotate to change values.
  • RF/Audio Meters: LED indicators display the strength of the incoming RF signal and the audio output level for each channel.
  • Gain Control: Individual gain controls for each channel allow precise adjustment of audio output levels.
  • Sync Button: Initiates an infrared (IR) sync with a compatible ULX-D transmitter to quickly transfer frequency and other settings.

3.2 Frequency Scan and Sync

To ensure interference-free operation, perform a frequency scan to find clear frequencies in your environment. Once clear frequencies are identified, use the IR sync function to transfer these frequencies to your ULX-D transmitters.

  1. Navigate to the 'Scan' menu using the control knob.
  2. Initiate a full scan. The receiver will display available clear frequencies.
  3. Select a desired frequency for each channel.
  4. Align the IR window of your ULX-D transmitter with the IR window on the receiver and press the 'Sync' button. The frequency and other settings will be transferred.

3.3 Networked Control and Monitoring

The ULXD4Q supports remote control and monitoring via Ethernet. Connect the receiver to a network and use Shure's Wireless Workbench software, SystemOn, or the ShurePlus Channels mobile app to manage system settings, monitor battery life of connected transmitters, and perform frequency coordination for multiple systems.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning

Regularly clean the exterior of the receiver with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure that ventilation openings are free from dust and debris.

4.2 Firmware Updates

Shure periodically releases firmware updates to enhance performance and add new features. Check the Shure website for the latest firmware versions and instructions on how to update your ULXD4Q receiver.

4.3 Storage

When not in use for extended periods, store the receiver in a cool, dry environment, preferably in its original packaging or a protective case.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your ULXD4Q receiver, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power: Ensure the power cable is securely connected to both the receiver and a working power outlet. Check the power switch position.
  • No RF Signal: Verify that the antennas are properly connected and positioned. Ensure the transmitter is powered on and operating on the correct frequency band. Perform a frequency scan to find clear channels.
  • No Audio Output: Check the gain settings on the receiver and your mixing console. Ensure the XLR cables are correctly connected. Confirm that the transmitter is sending an audio signal.
  • Interference/Dropouts: Rerun a frequency scan to find a clearer channel. Ensure line-of-sight between transmitter and receiver antennas. Keep the receiver away from other wireless devices, computers, and large metal objects.
  • Network Connectivity Issues: Verify Ethernet cable connections. Check network settings on the receiver and your computer. Ensure the receiver's IP address is compatible with your network.
