Setup
Battery Installation
The GCL 2-160 requires three (3) AA batteries for operation. These are typically included with the product. To install or replace batteries:
- Locate the battery compartment on the rear of the laser unit.
- Open the battery compartment cover.
- Insert the three AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
Important: Always remove batteries if the tool will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and damage.
Mounting Options
The GCL 2-160 comes with versatile mounting accessories for various applications:
- RM 1 Magnetic Rotating Mount: This mount allows the laser to rotate 360 degrees while staying centered on plumb points. It features powerful magnets for attachment to metal surfaces, or can be placed on a flat surface.
- Ceiling Grid Clip: Use this clip with the RM 1 mount for secure attachment to ceiling grids.
- Tripod Compatibility: The laser unit and its mount are compatible with standard tripods for stable positioning and height adjustment.

Operating Instructions
Powering On/Off and Mode Selection
To power on the device, slide the main switch to the "On" position. The laser will automatically self-level. To select different operating modes (horizontal line, vertical line, cross-lines, or plumb points), press the "Mode" button on the top of the unit. To power off, slide the main switch to the "Off" position.

Self-Leveling Function
The smart pendulum system allows the laser to self-level within an accuracy of up to +/- 4 degrees. If the unit is placed on a surface that is outside this range, it will indicate an out-of-level condition, typically by flashing the laser lines. For applications requiring lines at an angle, the manual mode locks the lines, allowing use at any desired angle.
Receiver Mode
For extended working ranges up to 165 feet, the GCL 2-160 can be used with an optional Bosch line laser receiver (e.g., LR 6). Activate the receiver mode on the laser unit to enable detection by the receiver, which is useful in bright conditions or over long distances where the laser line may not be visible to the naked eye.

Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your Bosch GCL 2-160 laser.
- Cleaning: Regularly clean the laser lenses and the tool's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Storage: Store the laser in its hard carrying case in a dry, cool place when not in use. Remove batteries for long-term storage.
- Durability: The robust over-molded construction makes the laser IP54 rated, providing splash water and dust protection. While durable, avoid submerging the tool in water or exposing it to excessive dust.

Figure 5: The Bosch GCL 2-160 boasts an accuracy of up to ±1/8 inch, a range of up to 165 ft (with receiver), and an IP54 rating for dust and splash protection.
Troubleshooting
- Laser Lines Not Visible: Ensure the batteries are correctly installed and charged. In bright light conditions or over long distances, use the optional Bosch line laser receiver.
- Laser Lines Flashing: This indicates the tool is out of its self-leveling range. Adjust the position of the laser until the lines become steady.
- Inaccurate Readings: Verify the tool is on a stable surface and within its self-leveling range. Ensure the pendulum lock is disengaged for self-leveling operation.
