3. Safety Information
Read all instructions carefully before installation and use. Keep this manual for future reference.
- Always ensure the door is open when testing the lock after installation to avoid accidental lockout.
- Do not attempt to modify the lock cylinder or its components, as this may compromise its security features and void any warranty.
- If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a qualified locksmith or professional installer.
- Keep keys in a secure location and do not label them with identifying information that could link them to your property.
4. Setup and Installation
This section outlines the general procedure for installing the European double cylinder lock. Ensure you have the necessary tools, typically a screwdriver.
4.1 Removing the Old Cylinder
- Open the door and locate the fixing screw on the door edge, typically in the middle of the lock mechanism.
- Unscrew and remove the fixing screw.
- Insert a key into the existing cylinder and turn it slightly (approximately 15-20 degrees clockwise or anti-clockwise) while gently pulling the cylinder towards you. This action aligns the cam with the cylinder body, allowing it to slide out.
- Once the cam is aligned, the cylinder should slide out of the door.
4.2 Installing the New Cylinder
- Insert one of the provided keys into the new Smith & Locke cylinder.
- Turn the key slightly to align the cam with the cylinder body.
- Slide the new cylinder into the lock mechanism opening in the door, ensuring it is centered.
- Once the cylinder is correctly positioned, insert the fixing screw through the door edge and tighten it securely. Do not overtighten.
- Test the lock with the door open first. Insert the key from both sides and ensure it turns smoothly and operates the cam correctly.
- Close the door and test the lock again to ensure proper engagement with the door frame strike plate.
5. Operation
The Smith & Locke European Double Cylinder Lock operates by key from both the interior and exterior sides of the door.
- To Lock: Insert the key into the keyway and turn it clockwise until the bolt extends fully into the door frame. Remove the key.
- To Unlock: Insert the key into the keyway and turn it anti-clockwise until the bolt retracts fully. Remove the key.
Ensure the key is fully inserted before turning to prevent damage to the key or the lock mechanism.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and smooth operation of your lock cylinder.
- Cleaning: Wipe the exterior of the lock cylinder with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and grime. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents, which can damage the polished brass finish.
- Lubrication: Periodically (e.g., once a year or if operation becomes stiff), apply a small amount of graphite-based lubricant or a specialized lock lubricant into the keyway. Do not use oil-based lubricants, as they can attract dust and cause blockages over time. Insert the key and turn it several times to distribute the lubricant.
- Key Care: Avoid using bent or damaged keys, as they can damage the internal mechanism of the lock.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your lock, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- Key is difficult to insert or remove:
- Check if the key is bent or damaged. Use a new, undamaged key.
- Apply a small amount of graphite lubricant into the keyway.
- Ensure the key is fully inserted before attempting to turn.
- Key turns but does not operate the lock:
- The cam might be misaligned. Try turning the key slightly while gently pulling or pushing the cylinder.
- The fixing screw might be too tight or too loose, affecting the cylinder's position. Adjust the screw.
- Internal mechanism damage. If these steps do not resolve the issue, professional assistance may be required.
- Lock is stiff or hard to turn:
- Apply graphite lubricant into the keyway and turn the key several times.
- Check for any obstructions in the keyway.
For persistent issues, contact a qualified locksmith.
