3. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when working with automotive tools. Failure to follow safety precautions can result in injury or damage to equipment.

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and gloves.
  • Ensure the vehicle is securely supported on jack stands or a lift before beginning work.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent accidental engine cranking.
  • Use the correct threaded rod for your specific engine application to prevent damage to the crankshaft threads.
  • Do not use impact tools with this installer kit, as it can damage the tool or the engine components.
  • Keep the work area clean and well-lit.

4. Setup

4.1. Identifying the Correct Threaded Rod

Before starting, identify the correct threaded rod for your vehicle's crankshaft. Refer to the compatibility list below:

Thread SizeCompatible Vehicles
M16 x 2.0General Motors (GM)
M14 x 1.5Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep
M12 x 1.75Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep
M12 x 1.5Ford

4.2. Preparing the Engine

  1. Ensure the crankshaft is free of any scratches or burrs. Clean the crank and the keyway thoroughly.
  2. Apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the crankshaft and the keyway.
  3. Verify that any existing key is properly seated in the hub of the harmonic balancer/pulley.

5. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps carefully to install the harmonic balancer or pulley using the OEMTOOLS 27306 kit:

  1. Select the appropriate threaded rod for your engine application (refer to Section 4.1).
  2. Thread the selected rod into the crankshaft by hand. Ensure it is properly seated and threads smoothly. Do not force it.
  3. Place the forcing nut with the thrust bearing assembly onto the threaded rod. The bearing should face away from the harmonic balancer/pulley.
  4. Thread the forcing nut onto the threaded rod and screw it into the end of the crankshaft.
  5. Using a wrench, hold the hex end of the threaded rod stationary.
  6. Using a second wrench, turn the forcing nut clockwise. Continue turning until the harmonic balancer/pulley is fully installed and seated against the crankshaft.
  7. Once the balancer/pulley is installed, remove the installer by turning the forcing nut counter-clockwise until the threaded rod is free.
  8. Finally, remove the threaded rod from the crankshaft.

Note: Do not attempt to press the balancer/pulley onto the crank without the keyway properly in place. If you encounter resistance or are unable to smoothly install the balancer/pulley, re-check the keyway for proper alignment and ensure the crankshaft threads are clean and undamaged.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues while using the harmonic balancer/pulley installer, consider the following:

  • Difficulty Threading Rod: Ensure you have selected the correct threaded rod for your engine's crankshaft. Check the crankshaft threads for damage or debris. Clean and lubricate threads if necessary.
  • Balancer/Pulley Not Seating: Verify that the keyway on the crankshaft and the balancer/pulley are perfectly aligned. Do not force the balancer/pulley; misalignment can cause damage. Check for any obstructions behind the balancer/pulley.
  • Excessive Resistance During Installation: Ensure the thrust bearing is properly positioned with the bearing surface facing away from the balancer/pulley. Lubricate the threads of the forcing nut and threaded rod. If resistance persists, re-check for proper alignment and correct rod selection.
  • Tool Damage: If any component of the kit appears damaged or bent, discontinue use immediately to prevent further damage to the tool or engine. Contact customer support for assistance.
