Magnetic Interference Warning

WARNING: Avoid strong magnetic fields.

For accurate readings, keep the compass away from sources of magnetic interference such as power lines, mobile phones, magnets, vehicles, and other metal objects. These can cause the magnetic needle to deviate, leading to incorrect readings.

Operating Instructions

1. Leveling the Compass

Before taking any reading, ensure the compass is perfectly level. Use the integrated spirit level (bubble level) to achieve this. The magnetic needle must be able to rotate freely.

Two images demonstrating how to level the Sportneer Compass. One shows a correct level with the green bubble centered, the other shows an incorrect, tilted position.

This visual guide shows the correct way to hold the compass level, with the green bubble centered in the spirit level, and an example of an incorrect, tilted position that would result in inaccurate readings.

2. Taking a Bearing

  1. Open the compass fully so the sighting mirror is upright and the compass dial is visible.
  2. Align the sighting line on the mirror with your target.
  3. Look through the rear sight lens to read the bearing on the compass dial. The rear sight lens magnifies the dial for easier reading.
  4. Rotate the bezel until the orienting arrow aligns with the travel arrow (red line) on the dial. The red line should be directly under the number '36' on the bezel for a North alignment.
  5. The number indicated by the travel arrow on the bezel is your bearing.

This video provides a visual guide on how to operate the Sportneer Compass, showing steps like rotating the bezel to align arrows and ensuring the compass is level for accurate readings.

3. Nighttime Navigation (Glow-in-the-Dark Feature)

For use in low-light or nighttime conditions, expose the compass to a light source (like sunlight or a flashlight) for a sufficient period during the day. The fluorescent coating on the north indicator and dial markings will then glow, providing visibility in the dark.

This image demonstrates the compass's glow-in-the-dark feature, showing how the dial and north indicator illuminate after exposure to light, making it usable for night navigation.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the compass with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish or internal components.
  • Storage: Store the compass in its protective pouch when not in use to prevent scratches and damage. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from strong magnetic fields.
  • Avoid Drops: While shockproof, repeated drops can affect calibration and accuracy. Handle with care.

Troubleshooting

Inaccurate Readings

  • Check for Magnetic Interference: Ensure you are not near any electronic devices, metal objects, or power lines that could disrupt the magnetic needle.
  • Level the Compass: Verify the compass is perfectly level using the spirit level. A tilted compass will give incorrect readings.
  • Free Movement: Ensure the magnetic needle can rotate freely without sticking. If it sticks, gently tap the compass to free it. If the issue persists, the compass may be damaged.

Difficulty Reading Dial in Dark

  • Re-expose to Light: The glow-in-the-dark feature requires prior exposure to light. Re-expose the compass to sunlight or a strong artificial light source for several minutes.
