Setup and Assembly

1. Unpacking and Component Identification

Carefully unpack all components and verify against the packing list. Ensure all parts are present and undamaged. The main components include the CGX mount head, tripod, counterweights, counterweight shaft, and NexStar+ hand controller.

2. Tripod Setup

Place the tripod on a stable, level surface. Extend the 2-inch stainless steel tripod legs to the desired height and secure them using the leg locks. Ensure the tripod is stable before proceeding.

3. Attaching the Mount Head

Carefully lift the CGX mount head and place it onto the tripod's mounting platform. Secure it using the central locking knob or screws provided. Ensure the mount head is firmly attached and does not wobble.

4. Internal Mechanism Overview

The CGX mount features high-torque servo motors and a belt-drive system for smooth and precise tracking. Two internal optical sensors contribute to its accuracy.

5. Installing Counterweights

Thread the counterweight shaft into the mount head. Slide the counterweights onto the shaft and secure them at an appropriate position to balance your telescope. The mount supports a 55 lb payload capacity, and proper balancing is crucial for optimal performance.

6. Attaching the Telescope and Hand Controller

Attach your telescope to the mount's dovetail saddle using the two all-new dovetail clamping knobs. Ensure the telescope is securely fastened before releasing your grip. Balance the telescope in both Right Ascension (RA) and Declination (DEC) axes. Connect the NexStar+ hand controller to the designated port on the mount.

Operation

1. Powering On and Initializing

Connect the DC power supply to the mount. Power on the mount. The NexStar+ Computer Hand Controller will begin its initialization sequence. Ensure a stable power source for reliable operation.

2. Polar Alignment

Accurate polar alignment is critical for precise tracking. The CGX mount supports various alignment methods, including All-Star Polar Align (ASPA) via the NexStar+ hand controller. For best results, perform a two-star alignment with calibration stars before ASPA.

3. Using the NexStar+ Hand Controller

The NexStar+ hand controller provides access to a 40,000-object database, guided tours, and custom object filters. Use the directional buttons and menu options to navigate and select celestial objects. The mount will automatically slew to the selected target and begin tracking.

4. Remote Operation and Astroimaging

The CGX mount features internal cabling for worry-free remote operation and an autoguider port. Control software, such as Celestron PWI (CPWI), can be used for remote astroimaging. Aux accessory ports are also available for additional devices.

The mount's design allows for +20° of additional tracking past the meridian, enhancing astroimaging sessions without immediate meridian flips.

Maintenance

1. Worm Gear Adjustment

Periodically, the worm gears may require adjustment to maintain optimal tracking performance. Refer to the detailed instructions in the full product manual for precise adjustment procedures.

2. Cable Management

Utilize the internal cabling features of the CGX mount to manage power and data cables. This prevents tangling and reduces the risk of snagging during operation, especially during long exposure astroimaging.

3. General Care

Keep the mount clean and free from dust and moisture. Store the mount in a dry, protected environment when not in use. Avoid exposing the mount to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight for extended periods.

Troubleshooting

1. Hand Controller Stuck on "Initializing..."

If the NexStar+ hand controller gets stuck on "Initializing...", ensure the power supply is stable and providing sufficient current. Try resetting the mount by disconnecting and reconnecting power. If the issue persists, update the hand controller firmware or contact Celestron support.

2. Right Ascension (RA) Drive Irregularities

If the RA drive exhibits erratic movement (e.g., rapid back-and-forth motion or continuous movement to a stop), this may indicate an internal mechanical or electronic issue. Ensure the mount is properly balanced and the worm gears are correctly adjusted. If the problem continues, contact Celestron customer service for repair.

3. Inaccurate Tracking or Go-To Performance

Inaccurate tracking or Go-To performance is often related to improper polar alignment or an inaccurate pointing model. Re-perform the polar alignment procedure carefully. Ensure the mount is level and balanced. If using CPWI, save the alignment model and re-establish it if the scope has been idle for a period.
