1. Introduction
This manual provides essential instructions for the safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Hitachi (Hikoki) CS33EB Petrol Chain Saw. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the chain saw to ensure proper use and to prevent personal injury or damage to the equipment. Keep this manual in a safe place for future reference.
2. Safety Information
Operating a chain saw can be dangerous if proper safety precautions are not followed. Always prioritize safety to prevent serious injury.
2.1 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Head Protection: Wear a safety helmet.
- Eye Protection: Use safety glasses or a face shield.
- Ear Protection: Wear ear defenders or earplugs.
- Hand Protection: Use heavy-duty work gloves.
- Leg Protection: Wear cut-resistant trousers or chaps.
- Foot Protection: Wear steel-toed safety boots with good grip.
2.2 General Safety Rules
- Never operate the chain saw when fatigued, under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
- Ensure the work area is clear of bystanders, children, and pets. Maintain a safe distance.
- Inspect the chain saw before each use for loose parts, damage, or leaks.
- Handle fuel with extreme care. Refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine off and cool.
- Be aware of kickback. Always maintain a firm grip with both hands and avoid cutting with the tip of the guide bar.
- Do not operate the chain saw in poor weather conditions, such as heavy rain or strong winds.
- Always carry the chain saw with the engine stopped, the guide bar and chain facing backward, and the chain brake engaged.
3. Components and Controls
Familiarize yourself with the various parts of your Hitachi (Hikoki) CS33EB chain saw before operation.

Figure 3.1: Overview of the Hitachi (Hikoki) CS33EB Petrol Chain Saw. This image displays the main body of the chain saw, including the engine housing, front and rear handles, guide bar, and cutting chain. The orange and grey color scheme is visible.
Key Components:
- Front Handle: For stable grip and control.
- Rear Handle: Contains the throttle trigger and safety lock-out.
- Chain Brake: Safety device to stop the chain instantly.
- Guide Bar: Supports and guides the cutting chain.
- Cutting Chain: The primary cutting component.
- Fuel Tank Cap: For filling petrol/oil mixture.
- Oil Tank Cap: For filling chain lubricant oil.
- Starter Handle: For manually starting the engine.
- Choke Lever: Used for cold starting the engine.
- Stop Switch: To turn off the engine.
4. Setup
4.1 Unpacking and Initial Inspection
- Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
- Check for any visible damage or missing parts. Contact your dealer if any issues are found.
- Ensure all protective covers are removed.
4.2 Fuel and Chain Oil Preparation
The CS33EB uses a 2-stroke engine and requires a specific fuel mixture and chain lubricant.
- Fuel Mixture: Mix unleaded gasoline with high-quality 2-stroke engine oil at the ratio specified in the engine manual (typically 25:1 or 50:1, refer to engine manufacturer's instructions). Use a dedicated fuel mixing container.
- Chain Lubricant: Use a high-quality bar and chain oil. Do not use waste oil or motor oil, as this can damage the pump and chain.
4.3 Filling Tanks
- Place the chain saw on a flat, stable surface.
- Clean the area around the fuel and oil caps to prevent dirt from entering the tanks.
- Carefully pour the prepared fuel mixture into the fuel tank (marked with a fuel pump icon).
- Pour the chain lubricant oil into the oil tank (marked with an oil drop icon).
- Securely tighten both caps. Wipe up any spills immediately.
4.4 Chain Tension Adjustment
Correct chain tension is crucial for safe and efficient operation.
- Ensure the chain brake is disengaged.
- Loosen the bar nuts slightly.
- Adjust the chain tensioning screw until the chain fits snugly against the guide bar, but can still be pulled around by hand without binding.
- Lift the tip of the guide bar slightly while tightening the bar nuts to ensure even tension.
- Re-check tension after tightening. A cold chain should have a slight sag on the underside of the bar, but the drive links should not come out of the bar groove.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Starting the Engine (Cold Start)
- Place the chain saw on a firm, flat surface. Ensure the chain brake is engaged.
- Push the stop switch to the "ON" position.
- Pull the choke lever out fully.
- Press the primer bulb several times until fuel is visible.
- Hold the chain saw firmly with one hand on the front handle and place your foot on the rear handle.
- Pull the starter handle slowly until resistance is felt, then pull sharply and quickly until the engine fires (usually a few pulls).
- As soon as the engine fires, push the choke lever halfway in (half-choke position).
- Pull the starter handle again until the engine starts and runs.
- Once the engine is running, push the choke lever fully in. Let the engine warm up for a few moments.
- Briefly blip the throttle to disengage the fast idle.
5.2 Starting the Engine (Warm Start)
If the engine is warm, the choke may not be needed, or only briefly.
- Ensure the chain brake is engaged and the stop switch is "ON".
- Pull the starter handle until the engine starts. If it doesn't start after a few pulls, try with the choke lever halfway out.
5.3 Stopping the Engine
To stop the engine, simply push the stop switch to the "OFF" position.
5.4 Basic Cutting Techniques
Always maintain a stable stance and firm grip on both handles. Engage the chain brake when moving between cuts.

Figure 5.1: The Hitachi (Hikoki) CS33EB Petrol Chain Saw being used to cut a large log. An operator wearing gloves is holding the chain saw, demonstrating a typical cutting operation. The chain saw's guide bar is partially embedded in the wood.
- Bucking: Cutting a fallen log into shorter sections. Ensure the log is stable and supported.
- Limbing: Removing branches from a fallen tree. Work from the base towards the top, cutting smaller branches first.
- Felling: Cutting down a standing tree. This is an advanced technique and requires extensive training and experience. Do not attempt without proper instruction.
Always be aware of the direction of fall, potential kickback, and pinch points. Never cut above shoulder height.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your chain saw. Always ensure the engine is off and cool, and the spark plug cap is disconnected before performing any maintenance.
6.1 Daily Checks (Before Each Use)
- Check chain sharpness and tension.
- Verify chain oil level and fuel level.
- Inspect the chain brake for proper function.
- Check for loose nuts, bolts, or screws.
- Ensure the air filter is clean.
6.2 Regular Maintenance
- Air Filter: Clean or replace the air filter regularly, especially in dusty conditions.
- Spark Plug: Inspect and clean the spark plug electrodes. Replace if worn or fouled.
- Guide Bar: Clean the guide bar groove and oil holes. Flip the guide bar periodically to ensure even wear.
- Chain Sharpening: Sharpen the chain regularly with a round file of the correct diameter. A sharp chain cuts efficiently and reduces kickback risk.
- Cooling Fins: Keep the engine's cooling fins clean to prevent overheating.
6.3 Storage
- Drain the fuel tank or run the engine until it runs out of fuel to prevent fuel degradation.
- Clean the entire chain saw thoroughly.
- Remove the chain and guide bar, clean them, and apply a light coat of oil to prevent rust.
- Store the chain saw in a dry, well-ventilated area, out of reach of children.
7. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter. For problems not listed here, consult a qualified service technician.
