1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Power Acoustik CB4-1800 Caliber Series 4-Channel Class AB Amplifier. This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your amplifier. Please read this manual thoroughly before attempting installation or operation to ensure optimal performance and safety.

The CB4-1800 is designed to deliver high-quality audio amplification for your vehicle's sound system, featuring a 4-channel configuration and Class AB circuitry for balanced sound reproduction.

2. Important Safety Instructions

  • Always disconnect the vehicle's battery negative terminal before starting any electrical work.
  • Ensure all wiring is properly routed and secured to prevent damage or short circuits.
  • Use appropriate gauge wiring for power, ground, and speaker connections as specified in this manual.
  • Mount the amplifier securely in a location that allows for adequate ventilation and is protected from moisture and excessive heat.
  • Do not operate the amplifier if it is damaged or malfunctioning. Refer servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Avoid listening to audio at excessively high volumes for prolonged periods, as this can cause hearing damage.

5. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the performance and longevity of your amplifier. If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a professional car audio installer.

5.1 Mounting Location

Choose a mounting location that is dry, well-ventilated, and secure. Avoid mounting the amplifier directly on carpet or in enclosed spaces that restrict airflow. Common locations include under seats, in the trunk, or on the back of a rear seat.

5.2 Wiring Connections

Refer to the diagrams below for proper wiring. Ensure all connections are tight and insulated to prevent short circuits.

5.2.1 Power (B+) Connection

Connect a heavy-gauge power cable (e.g., 4 AWG or 8 AWG depending on total system power) from the vehicle's positive battery terminal to the amplifier's B+ terminal. Install an in-line fuse holder with an appropriate fuse (not supplied) within 18 inches (45 cm) of the battery.

5.2.2 Ground (GND) Connection

Connect a heavy-gauge ground cable of the same size as the power cable from the amplifier's GND terminal to a clean, unpainted metal surface on the vehicle's chassis. Ensure a solid electrical connection by scraping away any paint or rust.

5.2.3 Remote Turn-On (REM) Connection

Connect a smaller gauge wire (e.g., 18 AWG) from the amplifier's REM terminal to the remote turn-on output of your head unit. This wire signals the amplifier to turn on when the head unit is active.

5.2.4 RCA Input Connections

Connect RCA cables from your head unit's pre-amp outputs to the amplifier's RCA input jacks. For 4-channel operation, connect front and rear RCA pairs.

5.2.5 Speaker Output Connections

Connect your speakers to the amplifier's speaker output terminals. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) for each speaker. The CB4-1800 supports 4-channel stereo operation or 2-channel bridged operation for higher power output to subwoofers.

6. Operating the Amplifier

Once installed, adjust the amplifier settings for optimal sound quality.

6.1 Input Sensitivity (Gain) Adjustment

The 'SENS' (Sensitivity) controls adjust the amplifier's input gain to match the output level of your head unit. Start with the gain set to minimum. Play a familiar track at about 75% of your head unit's maximum volume. Slowly increase the amplifier's gain until you hear slight distortion, then back it off slightly. This ensures maximum clean output.

6.2 Crossover Settings

The CB4-1800 features selectable crossover modes:

  • HPF (High-Pass Filter): Allows frequencies above the set point to pass through. Useful for full-range speakers to prevent low bass distortion.
  • FULL: Allows all frequencies to pass through. Use for full-range speakers if your head unit handles crossovers, or for subwoofers with an external crossover.
  • LPF (Low-Pass Filter): Allows frequencies below the set point to pass through. Essential for subwoofers to reproduce only bass frequencies.

Adjust the crossover frequency (if applicable) to blend smoothly with your other speakers or subwoofers.

7. Maintenance

The Power Acoustik CB4-1800 amplifier requires minimal maintenance. Keep the amplifier clean and free of dust and debris. Periodically check all wiring connections to ensure they remain secure. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on the amplifier's surface.

8. Troubleshooting

If you experience problems with your amplifier, consult the following troubleshooting guide before contacting support.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
