2. Key Features

  • Versatile Cartridge Compatibility: Supports both Moving Coil (MC) and Moving Magnet (MM) cartridges.
  • Adjustable Gain: Features a conveniently located gain attenuator on the top panel for precise level-matching with other line inputs in your audio system.
  • Extensive Loading Options: Dip switches on the underside allow for fine-tuning of impedance and capacitance, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of phono cartridges.
  • Integrated Subsonic Filter: A selectable subsonic filter helps to remove unwanted low-frequency rumble from warped records without affecting audible bass.
  • High-Quality Construction: Newly designed, CNC-machined, resonance-free aluminum chassis for superior audio performance and durability.
  • Gold-Plated Terminals: High-quality, gold-plated RCA input and output terminals ensure excellent signal transfer and corrosion resistance.

3. Setup and Connections

Before connecting the Smart Phono v2, ensure all audio components are powered off. Refer to the diagram below for connection points and the image of the underside for dip switch settings.

3.1. Physical Connections

  1. Power Supply: Connect the supplied external power supply to the DC input on the rear of the Smart Phono v2 and then to a suitable AC outlet.
  2. Turntable Input: Connect the RCA cables from your turntable to the "INPUT" RCA jacks on the Smart Phono v2. Ensure proper left and right channel connection.
  3. Ground Wire: Connect the ground wire from your turntable to the ground terminal on the Smart Phono v2 to minimize hum.
  4. Output to Amplifier: Connect the "OUTPUT" RCA jacks of the Smart Phono v2 to a line-level input (e.g., "AUX", "CD", "Tuner") on your integrated amplifier or preamplifier. Do NOT connect to another phono input.

3.2. Cartridge Type and Loading Settings

The Smart Phono v2 features dip switches on its underside to configure settings for your specific phono cartridge. It is crucial to set these correctly for optimal performance and sound quality. Refer to your cartridge's specifications for recommended loading.

Figure 2: Underside of the Clearaudio Smart Phono v2, detailing the dip switch configurations for cartridge type, loading, and subsonic filter.

  • MM/MC Selection: Locate the "MM" and "MC" dip switches. Set the switches according to your cartridge type. For Moving Magnet (MM) cartridges, ensure the MM switches are engaged. For Moving Coil (MC) cartridges, ensure the MC switches are engaged.
  • MC Load (Impedance): For Moving Coil (MC) cartridges, you can adjust the input impedance using the "MC load" dip switches. Common settings include 50R, 100R, 500R, 1kΩ, and 5kΩ. Consult your MC cartridge's manual for the recommended load impedance.
  • Capacitance (MM): For Moving Magnet (MM) cartridges, you can adjust the input capacitance using the dedicated dip switches. Options typically include 150pF, 250pF, and 400pF. Match this to your MM cartridge's recommended capacitance.
  • Subsonic Filter: The "subsonic filter OFF>ON" switch activates or deactivates the subsonic filter. Engaging this filter can help reduce low-frequency rumble caused by warped records or turntable motor noise, which can otherwise consume amplifier power and cause woofer pumping. It is generally recommended to keep this ON unless you experience a loss of desired deep bass.

Note: Always power off the unit before changing dip switch settings to prevent potential damage or unexpected behavior.

4. Operating Instructions

  1. Power On: After all connections are made and dip switches are set, press the power on/off button located on the top panel of the Smart Phono v2. The unit will illuminate to indicate it is powered on.
  2. Adjust Gain: The gain attenuator knob on the top panel allows you to fine-tune the output level of the Smart Phono v2. Adjust this knob so that the volume level from your turntable matches the level of other sources (e.g., CD player) connected to your amplifier. Start with a lower setting and gradually increase.
  3. Playback: Select the appropriate input on your amplifier, lower the tonearm onto a record, and enjoy your music.
  4. Power Off: When finished listening, press the power on/off button to turn off the unit.

5. Maintenance

The Clearaudio Smart Phono v2 requires minimal maintenance. Follow these guidelines to ensure its longevity:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the chassis. Do not use liquid cleaners, aerosols, or abrasive chemicals, as these may damage the finish or internal components.
  • Placement: Place the unit on a stable, level surface away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive moisture. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit.
  • Handling: Handle the unit with care. Avoid dropping or subjecting it to strong impacts.
