2. Important Safety Instructions

Please read these instructions carefully before operating the unit. Retain this manual for future reference. Observe all warnings and follow all instructions.

  • Do not use this apparatus near water.
  • Clean only with a dry cloth.
  • Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
  • Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug. A polarized plug has two blades with one wider than the other. A grounding-type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong. The wide blade or the third prong are provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.
  • Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched, particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.
  • Only use attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.
  • Use only with the cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table specified by the manufacturer, or sold with the apparatus. When a cart is used, use caution when moving the cart/apparatus combination to avoid injury from tip-over.
  • Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.
  • Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the apparatus has been damaged in any way, such as power-supply cord or plug is damaged, liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the apparatus, the apparatus has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped.

3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking

Carefully unpack your KM1700 amplifier. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage that may have occurred during transit. If damage is found, contact your dealer immediately.

3.2 Placement and Ventilation

The KM1700 is designed for rack mounting but can also be used as a tabletop unit. Ensure adequate ventilation around the amplifier. Do not block the front or rear ventilation grilles. Maintain at least 4 inches (10 cm) of clear space around the unit for proper airflow.

3.3 Connections

Before making any connections, ensure the amplifier is powered off and unplugged from the mains supply.

Input Connections:

Connect your audio source (mixer, preamplifier, etc.) to the KM1700's input connectors. The KM1700 features balanced XLR and 1/4" TRS input jacks for each channel (Channel A and Channel B). Use high-quality shielded cables for optimal performance.

  • XLR Inputs: For balanced connections from professional audio equipment.
  • 1/4" TRS Inputs: For balanced or unbalanced connections.

Output Connections:

Connect your passive loudspeakers to the KM1700's output connectors. The amplifier provides both professional SpeakON connectors and traditional binding posts for speaker connections.

  • SpeakON Outputs: Recommended for secure and high-power connections to compatible loudspeakers.
  • Binding Post Outputs: For connecting loudspeakers using bare wire or banana plugs. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -).

Ensure the impedance of your loudspeakers matches the amplifier's specifications to prevent damage. The KM1700 supports speaker loads down to 4 ohms per channel in stereo mode.

Power Connection:

Connect the supplied AC power cord to the amplifier's AC inlet and then to a grounded mains power outlet. Ensure the voltage selector switch (if present on your model) is set to the correct local voltage before connecting to power.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Powering On/Off

  • Power On: Ensure all connections are secure and input levels are set to minimum. Press the front panel POWER switch to turn on the amplifier. The POWER LED will illuminate.
  • Power Off: Reduce input levels to minimum before pressing the POWER switch to turn off the amplifier.

4.2 Front Panel Controls and Indicators

Figure 4.1: Detailed view of the KM1700 front panel controls and indicators.

  • LEVEL Controls (CH A, CH B): Rotary knobs to adjust the output level for each channel. Start with these at minimum (fully counter-clockwise) when powering on.
  • POWER Switch: Toggles the amplifier's power on or off.
  • POWER LED: Illuminates when the amplifier is powered on.
  • SIG (Signal) LEDs: Illuminate when an audio signal is present on the respective channel.
  • CLIP LEDs: Illuminate when the output signal is clipping (distorting). Reduce the input level if these LEDs light up frequently.
  • PROT (Protection) LEDs: Illuminate if the amplifier enters protection mode due to overheating, short circuits, or other faults. The amplifier will mute its output in protection mode.

4.3 Rear Panel Controls and Switches

Figure 4.2: Detailed view of the KM1700 rear panel controls and switches.

  • MODE Switch: Selects the amplifier's operating mode:
    • STEREO: Each channel operates independently, amplifying its own input signal to its own output.
    • MONO (Parallel): Both channels receive the signal from Channel A input, but operate independently. Useful for driving two separate speaker systems with the same mono signal.
    • BRIDGE: Combines both channels into a single, more powerful mono output. Use only with a single speaker connected to the BRIDGE output (typically SpeakON). Ensure the speaker impedance is suitable for bridged operation (e.g., 8 ohms minimum).
  • LIMITER Switch: Activates or deactivates the built-in limiter. The limiter prevents excessive output levels that could cause clipping and speaker damage. It is generally recommended to keep the limiter engaged.
  • SENSITIVITY Switch: Adjusts the input sensitivity of the amplifier (e.g., +4 dBu, 0 dBu, -10 dBV). Match this to the output level of your source device.
  • GROUND LIFT Switch: Helps eliminate hum or buzz caused by ground loops. If you experience hum, try flipping this switch.
  • CIRCUIT BREAKER: A resettable circuit breaker that protects the amplifier from overcurrent. If it trips, allow the unit to cool down, then press to reset.

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Disconnect the amplifier from power before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the exterior. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
  • Ventilation: Regularly check that the ventilation grilles are free from dust and debris. Accumulated dust can impede airflow and lead to overheating.
  • Storage: If storing the amplifier for an extended period, ensure it is in a dry, cool environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

6. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No powerPower cord disconnected; Circuit breaker tripped; Power outlet fault.Check power cord connection; Reset circuit breaker; Test power outlet with another device.
No soundInput levels too low; Speaker cables disconnected/faulty; Amplifier in protection mode; Source device issue.Increase level controls; Check all cable connections; Check PROT LED (if lit, see protection mode); Verify source device is sending signal.
Distorted soundInput signal too high (clipping); Speaker impedance mismatch; Faulty cables/speakers.Reduce input level (check CLIP LED); Ensure speaker impedance is within specifications; Test with different cables/speakers.
Hum or BuzzGround loop; Unshielded cables; Nearby electrical interference.Engage GROUND LIFT switch; Use shielded cables; Move amplifier away from power transformers or other interference sources.
PROT LED illuminatedOverheating; Short circuit on output; Speaker impedance too low.Ensure proper ventilation; Check speaker cables for shorts; Verify speaker impedance. Power cycle the unit after resolving the issue.

If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact qualified service personnel.
