Installation (Setup)
WARNING: Disconnect power at the main service panel before installing this thermostat to prevent electrical shock and equipment damage.
- Choose Location: Select an indoor location on an inside wall, approximately 5 feet (1.5 meters) above the floor. Avoid areas near heat sources (lamps, sunlight, fireplaces), cold drafts (windows, doors), or air ducts.
- Prepare Wiring: Run electrical wires from the main service panel to the heater and then to the thermostat location, following all local electrical codes. Ensure the wires are rated for the voltage and current of your heating system.
- Mount Thermostat Base: Carefully remove the thermostat cover to expose the mounting holes. Secure the thermostat base to the wall using the provided screws.
- Wire Connections: Connect the line voltage wires to the appropriate terminals on the thermostat. For single pole applications, there will typically be two wires from the power source and two wires going to the heater. Connect one incoming line wire to one thermostat terminal and the other incoming line wire to the other thermostat terminal. The thermostat acts as a switch in the circuit. Ensure all connections are tight and secure.
- Attach Cover: Once wiring is complete and secure, carefully reattach the thermostat cover.
- Restore Power: Restore power at the main service panel.
If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a qualified electrician.
Operation
The White Rodgers B30 thermostat features a simple rotary dial for temperature control.
- Turning On/Off: Rotate the dial to the 'OFF' position to turn off the heating system. Rotate the dial past 'OFF' to a desired temperature setting to turn on the heating system.
- Setting Temperature: Rotate the dial clockwise to increase the desired temperature and counter-clockwise to decrease it. The numbers on the dial indicate the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.
- The thermostat will automatically cycle your heating system on and off to maintain the set temperature.
Maintenance
The White Rodgers B30 thermostat requires minimal maintenance.
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the exterior of the thermostat with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Internal Components: This thermostat contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not attempt to open the internal components.
- Ensure that the vents on the thermostat casing (if any) are not obstructed to allow for proper temperature sensing.
Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with your thermostat, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Heater does not turn on. | No power to the thermostat/heater. | Check circuit breaker or fuse at the main service panel. Ensure power is restored. |
| Thermostat set to 'OFF' or too low. | Rotate the dial to a temperature setting above the current room temperature. | |
| Loose wiring connection. | WARNING: Disconnect power first. Check all wiring connections for tightness. | |
| Heater runs continuously. | Thermostat set too high. | Rotate the dial to a lower temperature setting. |
| Thermostat sensing element obstructed. | Ensure no objects are blocking the thermostat's vents or directly heating/cooling the thermostat. | |
| Inaccurate temperature reading. | Thermostat location is not ideal. | Relocate the thermostat away from drafts, direct sunlight, or heat sources. |
If problems persist after attempting these solutions, contact a qualified service technician.
