4. Setup and Installation
This bath drain assembly uses Schedule 40 PVC pipes and fittings that are designed to be glued together. Accurate measurement and cutting are essential for a leak-free installation.
Required Tools and Materials (Not Included):
- PVC primer and cement
- PVC pipe cutter or hacksaw
- Measuring tape
- Tub drain wrench
- Plumber's putty or silicone sealant
- Clean rags
Installation Steps:
- Prepare the Tub Openings: Clean the overflow and drain openings on the bathtub (back and bottom). Remove any old gasket material and ensure surfaces are smooth. A light sanding with 220-grit sandpaper may be beneficial.
- Install the Drain Shoe: Apply plumber's putty or silicone sealant around the underside of the drain flange. From inside the tub, insert the drain flange into the bottom drain opening. From underneath the tub, position the rubber gasket and washer, then thread the drain shoe onto the drain flange. It is recommended to have one person hold the drain flange flush from inside the tub while another person tightens the drain shoe from below using a tub drain wrench.
- Install the Overflow Assembly: Position the tapered gasket correctly on the overflow pipe. Attach the illusionary overflow cover to the overflow pipe. Secure the overflow assembly to the tub's overflow opening. Ensure a tight seal.
- Assemble PVC Piping: Refer to the provided diagram (Figure 3) for the general layout. Dry-fit all PVC pipes and fittings to determine the correct lengths required to connect the drain shoe, overflow assembly, and the main waste line. The Schedule 40 PVC pipes and fittings are designed to be cut to fit your specific tub dimensions.
- Cut and Glue Pipes: Once the correct lengths are determined, cut the PVC pipes using a pipe cutter or hacksaw. Apply PVC primer to both the pipe ends and the inside of the fittings, then apply PVC cement. Quickly join the pieces, giving them a quarter turn to ensure a strong bond. Work efficiently as PVC cement dries quickly.
- Connect to Waste Line: Connect the assembled drain and overflow system to your home's main waste line. Ensure all connections are secure and properly sealed.
- Test for Leaks: After the cement has cured (refer to cement manufacturer's instructions for curing time), fill the tub with water and check all connections for leaks. Also, test the overflow by filling the tub above the overflow opening. Inspect for any water seepage.
- Install Tip-Toe Stopper: Screw the tip-toe stopper into the drain shoe. Test its operation (press to close, press again to open).

6. Maintenance
Regular cleaning and maintenance will help preserve the finish and functionality of your bath drain.
- Cleaning the Finish: Clean the polished nickel components with a soft, damp cloth and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive pads, or acidic cleaners, as these can damage the finish.
- Drain Maintenance: Periodically remove the tip-toe stopper and clean any hair or debris that may have accumulated in the drain opening. This helps prevent clogs and ensures proper drainage.
- PVC Inspection: Occasionally inspect the visible PVC pipes and connections for any signs of leaks or damage. Address any issues promptly.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Westbrass bath drain, refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:
- Leaks at Connections:
- Ensure all PVC joints were properly primed and cemented during installation.
- Check that gaskets for the drain shoe and overflow are correctly seated and tightened.
- Verify that plumber's putty or silicone sealant was adequately applied around the drain flange.
- Drain Stopper Not Operating Correctly:
- Remove the tip-toe stopper and check for any debris or obstructions preventing its movement.
- Ensure the stopper is screwed in correctly and not cross-threaded.
- Slow Drainage:
- Remove the tip-toe stopper and clear any hair or debris from the drain opening.
- If the issue persists, a clog further down the waste line may be present and require professional attention.
