The Denon DSW-37M is a bass-reflex type powered subwoofer designed to reproduce powerful low-frequency sound with a maximum output of 100W (PEAK). It features a D.D.L. (Denon Double Layer) cone unit and is designed to complement Denon's 37 SERIES and 17 SERIES speakers.
2. Safety Information
Important Safety Instructions:
- Read these instructions.
- Keep these instructions.
- Heed all warnings.
- Follow all instructions.
- Do not use this apparatus near water.
- Clean only with a dry cloth.
- Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
- Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
- Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug. A polarized plug has two blades with one wider than the other. A grounding-type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong. The wide blade or the third prong are provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.
- Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched, particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.
- Only use attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.
- Use only with the cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table specified by the manufacturer, or sold with the apparatus. When a cart is used, use caution when moving the cart/apparatus combination to avoid injury from tip-over.
- Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.
- Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. 4. Setup
4.1 Placement
Proper placement of the subwoofer is crucial for optimal bass performance. Consider the following:
- Corner Placement: Placing the subwoofer in a corner often maximizes bass output, but can sometimes lead to boomy or exaggerated bass.
- Front Wall Placement: Placing it along the front wall, near your main speakers, can provide a more seamless blend with the rest of your audio system.
- Experimentation: The ideal placement varies greatly depending on room acoustics and personal preference. Experiment with different positions in your room to find the best sound.
- Vibration: Ensure the subwoofer is placed on a stable surface. Use the included anti-slip pads to minimize vibrations. Avoid placing it directly on or too close to sensitive equipment like turntables, as low-frequency vibrations can interfere with their operation.

4.2 Connections
Connect the subwoofer to your audio receiver or amplifier using the supplied subwoofer cable (RCA type).
- Locate the "SUBWOOFER OUT" or "LFE OUT" jack on your receiver/amplifier.
- Connect one end of the subwoofer cable to this output.
- Connect the other end of the subwoofer cable to the RCA input on the DSW-37M subwoofer. The DSW-37M has two RCA inputs, but connecting to just one is sufficient for operation. For optimal performance, some users may choose to use an RCA splitter to connect to both inputs.
- Connect the power cord to the subwoofer and then to a wall outlet.
4.3 Initial Settings
After connecting, adjust the following settings on the subwoofer:
- Crossover Frequency: This control determines the highest frequency the subwoofer will reproduce. A common starting point is 80 Hz. If your main speakers are small, you might set it higher (e.g., 100-120 Hz). If your main speakers are large, you might set it lower (e.g., 60 Hz). Adjust this to achieve a smooth transition between your main speakers and the subwoofer.
- Volume/Gain: Start with the volume control at a low setting. Play some audio and gradually increase the subwoofer volume until the bass blends naturally with your main speakers. The goal is to enhance the low end without making the subwoofer sound like a separate speaker.
- Phase Control: If available, this control helps ensure the subwoofer's sound waves are in sync with your main speakers. Experiment with 0° and 180° settings to find which provides the most impactful and coherent bass.
5. Operating the Subwoofer
5.1 Power On/Off
The DSW-37M features an auto power function. When set to AUTO, the subwoofer will automatically turn on when it detects an audio signal and enter standby mode after a period of no signal. Alternatively, you can manually switch the power ON or OFF.
Note: Some users have reported that the auto power function can be overly sensitive, leading to frequent on/off cycling and an audible "click" sound, especially at low volumes. If this occurs, it is recommended to set the auto power function to OFF and use an external power strip with an audio-sensing feature or manually turn the unit on and off.
5.2 Adjustments
Fine-tune the subwoofer's performance using the controls on the unit:
- Volume: Adjust the overall output level of the subwoofer.
- Crossover: Adjust the frequency at which the subwoofer takes over from your main speakers.
- Phase: Adjust the phase to ensure optimal integration with your main speakers.
Make small adjustments and listen to various types of audio content to find the settings that best suit your listening environment and preferences.
6. Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your DSW-37M subwoofer, follow these maintenance guidelines:
- Cleaning: Wipe the exterior surfaces with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents, as they can damage the finish.
- Ventilation: Ensure that the ventilation openings are not blocked. Adequate airflow prevents overheating.
- Environment: Avoid exposing the subwoofer to direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, high humidity, or excessive dust.
- Power Cord: Regularly check the power cord for any signs of damage. If damaged, discontinue use and contact qualified service personnel.
