1. Introduction
The Einhell GC-CS 85 E chain sharpener is a compact, robust, and efficient tool designed for the precise sharpening of all common chainsaw chains. Its design allows for accurate adjustment of the sharpening angle, ensuring that each chain link can be sharpened without the need for repositioning. A built-in depth stop mechanism prevents over-sharpening, protecting the chain from excessive material removal.
This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Einhell GC-CS 85 E chain sharpener. Please read it thoroughly before first use and keep it for future reference.
2. Safety Instructions
Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury and damage to the tool:
- Read the Manual: Familiarize yourself with all controls and proper use before operating the sharpener.
- Work Area: Keep your work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
- Electrical Safety: Ensure the power supply matches the specifications on the tool's rating plate. Do not expose the sharpener to rain or wet conditions.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves when operating the sharpener.
- Secure the Workpiece: Always ensure the chainsaw chain is securely clamped in the vice before sharpening.
- Avoid Overreaching: Maintain proper footing and balance at all times.
- Unplug When Not in Use: Disconnect the sharpener from the power supply before making adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool.
- Maintenance: Keep the sharpener and its accessories in good working condition. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the tool's operation.

4. Setup and Assembly
Before using the sharpener, it must be properly assembled and secured.
4.1 Mounting the Sharpener
The sharpener is designed to be securely mounted to a workbench or a stable surface. Use appropriate screws and washers (not supplied) to fix the base of the sharpener firmly. Ensure the mounting location provides sufficient space for operation and chain movement.

5. Operating Instructions
Follow these steps for effective and safe chain sharpening:
5.1 Preparing the Chain
- Clean the chainsaw chain thoroughly to remove any dirt, sawdust, or debris.
- Identify the cutting teeth that need sharpening.
5.2 Clamping the Chain
- Place the chain into the clamping vice, ensuring one cutting tooth is positioned directly under the grinding wheel.
- Tighten the vice securely to hold the chain firmly in place.
5.3 Adjusting Sharpening Angle
The sharpener features a swiveling base with an angle scale for precise adjustment.
- Loosen the locking knob for the swiveling base.
- Rotate the base to align the desired sharpening angle (typically 25-35 degrees, refer to your chainsaw chain's specifications) with the indicator.
- Tighten the locking knob to secure the angle.

5.4 Setting the Depth Stop
The depth stop prevents the grinding wheel from removing too much material from the chain tooth.
- Lower the grinding head slowly until the grinding wheel just touches the cutting edge of the chain tooth.
- Adjust the depth stop knob until it makes contact with the main unit, limiting further downward movement.
- Ensure the depth stop is set so that only the cutting edge is sharpened, without touching the chain's body.

Figure 5.2: Close-up of the depth stop adjustment knob. This knob controls how deep the grinding wheel can descend, preventing over-sharpening.

Figure 5.3: Graphic illustrating the adjustable depth stop. This feature ensures consistent sharpening depth across all teeth.
5.5 Sharpening Process
- Plug in the sharpener.
- Switch on the sharpener.
- Slowly lower the grinding head using the handle until the grinding wheel makes contact with the chain tooth. Apply light, consistent pressure.
- Sharpen each tooth for a few seconds until a sharp edge is achieved. Avoid excessive pressure, which can overheat the chain or grinding wheel.
- Lift the grinding head, release the chain vice, and advance the chain to the next tooth of the same angle. Re-clamp and repeat the sharpening process.
- Once all teeth facing one direction are sharpened, rotate the swiveling base to the corresponding angle for the teeth facing the opposite direction.
- Repeat the sharpening process for all remaining teeth.

6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your sharpener.
6.1 Cleaning
- Always unplug the sharpener before cleaning.
- Use a brush or compressed air to remove sawdust and grinding dust from the machine, especially around the grinding wheel and clamping mechanism.
- Wipe down external surfaces with a damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
6.2 Grinding Wheel Replacement
Replace the grinding wheel when it becomes worn or damaged. Refer to section 4.2 for installation steps, reversing the process for removal.
6.3 Storage
Store the sharpener in a dry, secure location, out of reach of children. Protect it from dust and moisture.
