3. Setup

3.1. Setting Your Personal Combination

Your Hama 00178111 lock comes with a factory-set combination, usually 0-0-0-0. To set your personal combination:

  1. Ensure the lock is open and the cable is disengaged.
  2. Locate the reset mechanism. This is typically a small knob or screw on the lock body, often marked with an arrow or "SET".
  3. Rotate the reset knob 90 degrees clockwise (or as indicated by the lock's specific design) until it clicks into place. If it's a screw, turn it a quarter turn.
  4. Set your desired 4-digit combination by rotating the number wheels. Choose a memorable but secure combination.
  5. Rotate the reset knob back 90 degrees counter-clockwise (or to its original position) until it clicks. If it's a screw, turn it back.
  6. Scramble the numbers to test your new combination. Then, align your new combination and attempt to open the lock.

Important: Make a note of your new combination and store it in a safe place. Without the correct combination, the lock cannot be opened or reset.

3.2. Mounting the Transport Holder

The included transport holder allows for convenient attachment of the lock to your bicycle's saddle tube.

  1. Identify the saddle tube on your bicycle.
  2. Attach the two halves of the transport holder around the saddle tube.
  3. Secure the holder using the provided screws or fastening mechanism, ensuring it is tight and stable.
  4. Once the holder is securely mounted, the lock can be clicked into place for transport and easily removed when needed.

4. Operating the Lock

4.1. Locking Your Bicycle

  1. Align the number wheels to your personal 4-digit combination.
  2. Press the release button (if present) or pull the cable end out of the lock body.
  3. Thread the spiral cable through the frame of your bicycle and around a secure, immovable object (e.g., a bike rack, lamppost).
  4. Insert the free end of the cable back into the lock body until it clicks securely into place.
  5. Scramble the number wheels to secure the lock.

4.2. Unlocking Your Bicycle

  1. Align the number wheels to your personal 4-digit combination.
  2. Once the correct combination is set, the lock mechanism will release.
  3. Pull the cable end out of the lock body.
  4. Remove the cable from your bicycle and the secured object.

5. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and reliable operation of your Hama 00178111 lock:

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the lock body and cable with a damp cloth to remove dirt and grime. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Lubrication: While combination locks generally require minimal lubrication, a small amount of silicone-based lubricant can be applied to the number wheels and locking mechanism if they become stiff. Do not use oil-based lubricants as they can attract dirt.
  • Storage: Store the lock in a dry place when not in use to prevent corrosion.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the cable for any signs of wear, cuts, or damage to the plastic sheathing. If significant damage is observed, consider replacing the lock for optimal security.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Lock will not open:
    • Ensure the correct 4-digit combination is perfectly aligned.
    • Try rotating the wheels slightly back and forth to ensure they are not stuck between numbers.
    • If the combination has been forgotten, the lock cannot be opened without it. There is no master key or override.
  • Number wheels are stiff:
    • Clean the wheels and surrounding areas to remove any accumulated dirt.
    • Apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the wheels.
  • Cable does not insert/release smoothly:
    • Ensure the combination is correctly set before attempting to insert or release the cable.
    • Check for any obstructions in the locking mechanism.
