Setup

The REOTEMP Moisture Meter requires one AAA battery for operation. The battery is typically pre-installed or included in the packaging.

  1. Battery Installation/Check: Locate the battery compartment on the back of the meter head. Open the compartment and ensure a fresh AAA battery is correctly inserted, observing polarity (+/-). Close the compartment securely.
  2. Initial Inspection: Before first use, inspect the probe for any damage or debris. Ensure the probe tip is clean.

Operating Instructions

Follow these steps to obtain accurate moisture readings:

  1. Prepare the Area: Clear any surface debris, mulch, or rocks from the area where you intend to measure moisture.
  2. Insert the Probe: Hold the meter by the T-handle and gently insert the metal probe vertically into the soil or compost. Push the probe down to the desired depth. For plants, insert it about two-thirds of the way into the pot or root zone. Avoid forcing the probe, as this can damage it.
  3. Wait for Reading: Allow approximately 60 seconds for the meter to stabilize and display an accurate reading on the dial.
  4. Read the Dial: The dial indicates moisture levels from 0 (DRY) to 10 (WET). Interpret the reading based on the needs of your specific plants or compost.
  5. Remove the Probe: Gently pull the probe straight out of the soil or compost.
  6. Clean the Probe: After each use, wipe the probe clean with a damp cloth to remove any soil or residue. This prevents contamination and ensures accurate future readings.

Applications:

This moisture meter is suitable for various applications, including:

  • Garden: For flowers, vegetables, and shrubs.
  • Farm: For agricultural fields and larger planting areas.
  • Lawn: To assess turf moisture levels.
  • Compost: To monitor moisture content for optimal decomposition.

Calibration

The REOTEMP Moisture Meter is designed to provide relative moisture readings on a 0-10 scale. It calibrates to your specific soil or compost conditions. There is no manual calibration procedure required by the user. The meter measures the electrical conductivity of the soil, which is directly related to its moisture content.

To understand what readings are ideal for your specific plants:

  1. Water Thoroughly: Water your plant or area until it is adequately moist.
  2. Take a Reading: Insert the meter and note the reading. This will be your "ideal moist" reference point.
  3. Allow to Dry: Let the soil dry out to a point where the plant typically needs watering.
  4. Take Another Reading: Note this reading as your "needs watering" reference point.

By establishing these reference points, you can accurately determine when your plants require water.

Maintenance

  • Clean the Probe: Always clean the metal probe thoroughly after each use with a damp cloth to remove soil particles and prevent corrosion. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
  • Storage: Store the meter in a dry place, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight. Keep the probe tip protected to prevent damage.
  • Battery Replacement: If readings become inconsistent or the meter stops functioning, replace the AAA battery.
  • Avoid Water Immersion: Do not immerse the meter head (the white display unit) in water. Only the metal probe is designed for insertion into moist media.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No reading or inconsistent reading.Dead or improperly installed battery. Dry soil. Dirty probe.Check and replace AAA battery. Ensure soil is moist enough to conduct electricity. Clean the probe thoroughly.
Meter reads "DRY" in visibly moist soil.Probe not inserted deep enough. Soil too dense or compacted.Insert the probe deeper into the root zone. Loosen the soil slightly before insertion. Ensure good contact between probe and soil.
Meter reads "WET" in visibly dry soil.Residual moisture on probe from previous use.Clean the probe thoroughly and ensure it is dry before use.
