4. Setup and Installation
Follow these steps to properly connect your welding cable to the HITBOX HBM200 ground clamp:
- Prepare the Cable: Carefully strip approximately 1-2 inches of insulation from the end of your welding ground cable to expose the copper strands. Ensure the strands are clean and free of debris.
- Insert Cable into Clamp: Loosen the three set screws on the clamp using the provided hex key. Insert the stripped end of the welding cable into the designated opening on the clamp. Ensure the copper strands are fully seated within the clamp's connection point.
- Secure the Connection: Tighten the three set screws firmly with the hex key. This will secure the cable and ensure optimal electrical contact. Do not overtighten, but ensure the cable cannot be easily pulled out.
- Attach to Workpiece: Use the main screw mechanism to open the clamp jaws. Position the clamp securely onto a clean, conductive area of your workpiece. Tighten the main screw to ensure a strong, stable connection.

5. Operating Instructions
Once the ground clamp is properly installed and secured to your welding machine and workpiece, you can begin your welding operation. Ensure the contact point on the workpiece is clean and free of paint, rust, or other non-conductive materials to achieve the best electrical connection.

Figure 6: The ground clamp provides a stable electrical path during welding.
The solid brass construction of this clamp helps maintain a steady arc and makes striking an arc easier. Always ensure the clamp is tightly fastened to prevent it from detaching during work, which could compromise safety and weld quality.
6. Maintenance
- Regular Cleaning: Periodically clean the clamp jaws and connection points to remove any welding splatter, dirt, or oxidation that could impede electrical conductivity. A wire brush can be used for this purpose.
- Inspect Cable Connection: Regularly check the cable connection at the clamp for tightness. If the screws loosen over time, re-tighten them to maintain a secure connection.
- Check for Damage: Inspect the clamp for any signs of physical damage, such as cracks in the brass or wear on the screw threads. Replace the clamp if significant damage is observed.
- Storage: Store the ground clamp in a dry, clean environment when not in use to prevent corrosion and extend its lifespan.
7. Troubleshooting
- Poor Arc Stability or Difficulty Striking Arc:
- Check the ground clamp connection to the workpiece. Ensure it is clean and tightly secured to a bare metal surface.
- Inspect the cable connection to the clamp. Re-tighten the set screws if loose.
- Verify the welding cable itself is not damaged or corroded.
- Clamp Overheating:
- Ensure the clamp's current rating (400A) is appropriate for your welding machine's output.
- Check for loose connections at both the clamp and the welding machine, as these can cause resistance and heat buildup.
- Ensure the contact area on the workpiece is sufficient and clean.
- Clamp Detaches from Workpiece:
- Ensure the main screw is tightened sufficiently to hold the clamp firmly.
- Verify the workpiece thickness is within the clamp's jaw opening capacity.
