1. Introduction
The Grundfos SCALA2 is a fully integrated water booster pump designed to provide consistent water pressure in all taps, even when multiple taps or showers are in use simultaneously. This compact unit integrates a pump, motor, tank, sensor, drive, and non-return valve. Its intelligent pump control automatically adjusts performance based on inlet pressure and water consumption. The water-cooled motor ensures quiet operation. The SCALA2 features a built-in sensor that continuously monitors discharge pressure, boosting operation immediately if pressure drops below the desired level. This intelligent control ensures optimal water pressure throughout your home.

2. Safety Information
Read all safety warnings and instructions carefully before installing or operating the pump. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, serious injury, or property damage. Keep this manual for future reference.
2.1 General Safety Warnings
- Electrical Hazard: Ensure the power supply matches the pump's voltage (230 Volts). Always disconnect power before performing any service or maintenance. The pump must be properly grounded.
- Water Pressure: The pump operates under pressure. Ensure all connections are secure and leak-free to prevent water damage.
- Installation: Installation should be performed by qualified personnel in accordance with local codes and regulations.
- Operating Environment: Do not operate the pump in explosive atmospheres or where flammable liquids or gases are present. Protect the pump from freezing temperatures.
- Children and Unauthorized Personnel: Keep children and unauthorized persons away from the pump during operation.

2.2 Electrical Connection Safety
The Grundfos SCALA2 pump is designed for a 230V AC/DC power supply. It comes with a grounded plug.
- Ensure the electrical outlet is properly grounded and rated for the pump's power requirements.
- Do not use extension cords unless absolutely necessary and ensure they are rated for outdoor use and the pump's power.
- Never operate the pump with a damaged power cord or plug.

3. Setup and Installation
3.1 Package Contents
- Grundfos SCALA2 Pressure Boosting Pump (Model 98562817)
- User Manual (this document)
3.2 Choosing a Location
Select a location that is:
- Protected from freezing temperatures and direct sunlight.
- Well-ventilated.
- Close to the main water supply and a suitable electrical outlet.
- On a stable, level surface to minimize vibration and noise.
3.3 Water Connections
- Inlet Connection: Connect the incoming water supply to the pump's inlet port. Ensure a tight, leak-free connection using appropriate plumbing fittings and thread sealant. It is recommended to install a filter on the low-pressure side of the pump to protect it from sand and silt.
- Outlet Connection: Connect the pump's outlet port to your household's water distribution system. Again, ensure a secure and leak-free connection.
- Check Valves: The SCALA2 has a built-in non-return valve. Additional check valves may be required depending on local plumbing codes.
3.4 Electrical Connection
- Ensure the power supply is off at the main breaker before connecting the pump.
- Plug the pump's power cord into a properly grounded 230V electrical outlet.
- Verify that the voltage matches the pump's requirements as specified on the product label.
3.5 Priming the Pump
The SCALA2 is a self-priming pump, capable of lifting water from a depth of up to 8 meters (26 feet) in less than 5 minutes.
- Open a tap in your house to allow air to escape the system.
- Turn on the power to the pump. The pump will start automatically and begin to draw water.
- Once a steady flow of water comes from the tap, close the tap. The pump will then build pressure and stop.
- Check all connections for leaks.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Control Panel Overview

Figure 4.1: Angled view of the SCALA2 pump, highlighting the user-friendly control panel for easy operation.

Figure 4.2: Detailed view of the SCALA2 control panel, showing the power button, pressure adjustment arrows, pressure indicator lights (1-7), and the reset button.
The SCALA2 features an intuitive control panel with the following main elements:
- Power Button (⏻): Turns the pump on or off.
- Pressure Adjustment Arrows (▲ / ▼): Adjusts the desired discharge pressure.
- Pressure Indicator Lights (1-7): Displays the current pressure setting.
- Reset Button: Used to clear error messages or restart the pump after a fault.
- Constant Pressure Indicator: Illuminates when the pump is maintaining a constant pressure.
- Status Indicators: Lights indicating various operational statuses or warnings (e.g., dry running, leak detection).
4.2 Initial Start-up and Pressure Setting
- After priming, ensure all taps are closed.
- Press the Power Button (⏻) to turn on the pump.
- Use the Pressure Adjustment Arrows (▲ / ▼) to select your desired pressure level. The indicator lights (1-7) will show the selected setting. Start with a middle setting (e.g., 4 or 5) and adjust as needed.
- The pump will automatically maintain this pressure.
4.3 Normal Operation
The SCALA2 operates automatically. When a tap is opened, the pump detects the pressure drop and starts to maintain the set pressure. When all taps are closed, the pump will stop after a short delay.
5. Maintenance
The Grundfos SCALA2 pump is designed for minimal maintenance. However, regular checks can ensure optimal performance and longevity.
5.1 Regular Inspections
- Visual Check: Periodically inspect the pump and connections for any signs of leaks, corrosion, or damage.
- Noise Level: Listen for any unusual noises during operation, which could indicate a problem.
- Performance: Monitor water pressure consistency. If performance degrades, refer to the troubleshooting section.
5.2 Cleaning
Clean the exterior of the pump with a damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Ensure ventilation openings are clear of dust and debris.
5.3 Inlet Filter
While the pump itself does not have a user-serviceable internal filter, it is highly recommended to install an external inlet filter (e.g., a 50 PPM filter) on the low-pressure side of the pump. This protects the pump from sediment and debris, especially in well water applications. Regularly inspect and clean or replace this external filter according to its manufacturer's instructions.
5.4 Winterization
If the pump is installed in an area subject to freezing temperatures, it must be drained to prevent damage.
- Disconnect power to the pump.
- Close the inlet and outlet valves.
- Open the drain plugs on the pump (refer to the product diagram for locations) to allow all water to escape.
- Store the pump in a warm, dry place if possible, or ensure it is completely drained and protected from freezing.
6. Troubleshooting
This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter with your Grundfos SCALA2 pump.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Pump does not start or run. | No power supply; tripped breaker; pump in fault mode. | Check power connection and circuit breaker. Press the Reset button on the control panel. |
| No water pressure or low pressure. | No water supply to pump; air in system; clogged inlet filter; incorrect pressure setting. | Check water supply. Re-prime the pump. Clean or replace external inlet filter. Adjust pressure setting using the control panel arrows. |
| Pump runs continuously or cycles frequently. | Leak in the plumbing system; open tap; faulty non-return valve. | Check all plumbing for leaks (the SCALA2 has a leak detection feature, indicated by a specific light). Ensure all taps are closed. If problem persists, contact a qualified plumber. |
| Unusual noise or vibration. | Air in pump; pump not securely mounted; foreign object in pump. | Re-prime the pump. Ensure pump is on a stable surface. Disconnect power and inspect for obstructions (if safe to do so). |
| Leak light illuminated on control panel. | System leak detected. | Thoroughly inspect all plumbing connections and fixtures for leaks. Repair any identified leaks. |
