2. Safety Information
Please read and understand all safety instructions before installing or operating the Synology RKS1317 Sliding Rail Kit. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury or damage to equipment.
- Weight Considerations: Server equipment can be heavy. Always use proper lifting techniques and seek assistance when handling heavy RackStations to prevent injury.
- Stable Environment: Ensure the server rack is stable and properly secured before installing the rails and RackStation.
- Tool Safety: Use appropriate tools for installation and ensure they are in good working condition.
- Pinch Points: Be aware of potential pinch points when extending or retracting the rails and RackStation.
- Ventilation: Ensure adequate airflow around the RackStation once installed to prevent overheating.
3. Package Contents
Verify that all components are present and undamaged before proceeding with installation.
- Synology RKS1317 Sliding Rail (Left)
- Synology RKS1317 Sliding Rail (Right)
- Mounting Screw Kit (typically includes various screws and cage nuts for rack attachment)
4. Setup and Installation
4.1 Before You Begin
Before installing the RKS1317 Sliding Rail Kit, ensure your server rack meets the following requirements:
- Rack Mounting Holes: Must be square and at least 3/8 inch x 3/8 inch (approximately 9.5mm x 9.5mm).
- Cabinet Depth: The rack cabinet depth must be between 610mm and 890mm.
- Tools Required: Phillips head screwdriver, measuring tape, and potentially a rack unit (U) marking tool.
4.2 Mounting the Rails to the Rack
- Identify Rack Units: Determine the desired rack units (U) for your Synology RackStation. Mark the front and rear rack posts accordingly.
- Attach Front Brackets: Align the front mounting bracket of one sliding rail with the marked square holes on the front rack post. Secure it using the appropriate screws and cage nuts from the mounting kit. Ensure it is level and firmly attached.
- Extend and Attach Rear Brackets: Extend the sliding rail towards the rear of the rack. Align the rear mounting bracket with the corresponding square holes on the rear rack post. Secure it using screws and cage nuts.
- Repeat for Second Rail: Install the second sliding rail on the opposite side of the rack, ensuring it is at the same rack unit height and parallel to the first rail.
- Verify Stability: Gently pull and push each installed rail to confirm it is securely mounted and does not wobble.
4.3 Mounting the RackStation to the Rails
- Prepare RackStation: Ensure any necessary rail mounting brackets are attached to the sides of your Synology RackStation, as per its specific manual.
- Align RackStation: Carefully align the RackStation with the installed sliding rails. The inner rails of the RKS1317 kit should slide into the corresponding channels on the RackStation's side brackets.
- Slide In: Gently push the RackStation into the rack. It should slide smoothly along the rails. Do not force the unit. If resistance is met, retract and re-align.
- Secure RackStation: Once fully inserted, ensure the RackStation is locked into place. Some RackStations may have additional front screws or latches for extra security.
5. Operation
5.1 Sliding the RackStation In and Out
The RKS1317 rails allow for easy access to your RackStation for maintenance or cable management.
- Unlock: Locate the release tabs or buttons on the front of the sliding rails (typically on the inner rail section). Press or pull these tabs to disengage the locking mechanism.
- Extend: Carefully pull the RackStation forward out of the rack until it reaches its full extension. The rails will lock in the extended position to prevent accidental retraction.
- Retract: To push the RackStation back into the rack, press the release tabs again and gently push the unit until it is fully seated and the front locking mechanism engages.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
Periodically inspect the rails for dust or debris. Use a dry, lint-free cloth to wipe down the rail surfaces. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents.
6.2 Inspection
Regularly check all mounting screws and connections to ensure they remain tight. Verify that the sliding mechanism operates smoothly. If any components appear damaged or worn, contact Synology support for assistance.
7. Troubleshooting
7.1 Rails Not Sliding Smoothly
- Check Alignment: Ensure both rails are installed parallel and at the same height within the rack.
- Obstructions: Inspect the rail channels for any debris or foreign objects.
- Over-tightened Screws: Verify that mounting screws are tight but not excessively so, which could deform the rails.
7.2 RackStation Not Fitting or Securing
- Compatibility: Confirm your RackStation model is compatible with the RKS1317 rails (1U/2U/3U models).
- RackStation Brackets: Ensure any required RackStation-specific rail brackets are correctly installed on the RackStation itself.
- Alignment: Re-align the RackStation with the inner rails carefully.
7.3 Rails Not Securely Mounted to Rack
- Screw Tightness: Re-tighten all mounting screws and cage nuts on both front and rear rack posts.
- Rack Hole Type: Confirm your rack has square mounting holes of the specified size (3/8" x 3/8").
- Cabinet Depth: Ensure your rack's depth is within the specified range (610mm - 890mm).
