1.1. Package Contents

2. Setup

2.1. Battery Installation

  1. Ensure the camera is powered off.
  2. Open the battery compartment cover, typically located at the bottom of the camera.
  3. Insert the battery with the contacts facing the correct direction, as indicated by the diagram inside the compartment.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely until it clicks into place.

2.2. Memory Card Insertion

  1. Locate the memory card slot, usually on the side or bottom of the camera.
  2. Open the memory card slot cover.
  3. Insert the 32GB SDHC Class 10 memory card into the slot with the label facing the correct direction, until it clicks into place.
  4. Close the memory card slot cover securely.
  5. Note: Always format a new memory card in the camera before first use to ensure optimal performance and compatibility.

2.3. Lens Attachment

  1. Remove the body cap from the camera and the rear lens cap from the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm lens.
  2. Align the white index mark on the lens barrel with the corresponding white index mark on the camera's lens mount.
  3. Gently insert the lens into the camera mount.
  4. Rotate the lens clockwise until it locks into place with an audible click.
  5. Caution: Avoid touching the sensor or lens elements during attachment.

2.4. Initial Power On and Basic Settings

  1. Turn the camera on using the power switch.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts to set the language, date, time, and time zone.
  3. Refer to the camera's on-screen menu for further customization of settings.

3. Operating the Camera

3.1. Controls Overview

The Leica SL (Typ 601) features an intuitive control layout. Key controls include the shutter button, mode dial, command dials, and various customizable function buttons. Familiarize yourself with their locations and functions as described in the camera's on-screen guide or full digital manual.

3.2. Taking Photos

  • Focusing: The camera utilizes Contrast Detection Auto Focus with 171 autofocus points. You can select between automatic and manual focus modes. In manual focus, use the lens's focus ring.
  • Exposure: The camera offers various exposure controls, including Program mode. The bundled lens has an aperture range of F2.8-F4.0. Adjust ISO sensitivity (Expanded ISO Minimum: 100) as needed for lighting conditions.
  • Shooting Modes: Select from modes such as Automatic, Landscape, Macro, Portrait, Shutter Priority, and Sports via the mode dial or menu.
  • Continuous Shooting: Capture fast-moving subjects with continuous shooting at up to 10 frames per second (FPS).

3.3. Recording Videos

  • The camera supports video recording at 1080p resolution with a frame rate of 30 FPS.
  • Video files are saved in MP4 format.
  • Audio recording is supported. Ensure external microphones are connected if desired.
  • Switch to Movie Mode to access video-specific settings.

3.4. Playback and Review

Review your captured images and videos on the camera's LCD viewfinder/display. Use the navigation buttons to browse, zoom, and delete files. The display features a color screen with a maximum resolution of 20 MP for image review.

3.5. Connectivity

  • USB: Connect the camera to a computer using a USB cable for file transfer. The camera has one USB port.

4. Maintenance

4.1. Cleaning the Camera Body and Lens

  • Use the provided blower brush to remove dust from the lens and camera body.
  • For smudges on the lens, apply a small amount of lens cleaning solution to the microfiber cloth and gently wipe in a circular motion. Use lens tissue paper for delicate cleaning.
  • Clean the LCD screen with a clean microfiber cloth or the provided LCD screen protectors.
  • Warning: Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials. Avoid direct contact with the sensor.

4.2. Battery Care

  • Charge the battery fully before each use.
  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  • Avoid exposing batteries to extreme temperatures.

4.3. Storage

When not in use, store the camera and lens in the provided padded carrying case in a dry, dust-free environment. Attach lens caps and the body cap to protect the optics and sensor.

5. Troubleshooting

  • Camera Not Powering On: Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted. Check that the power switch is in the 'ON' position.
  • Focus Issues: Verify that the lens is securely attached. Check focus mode settings (autofocus/manual focus). Ensure there is sufficient light for the autofocus system to operate.
  • Memory Card Error: Reinsert the memory card. Try formatting the card in the camera (this will erase all data). If the issue persists, try a different compatible SDHC memory card.
  • Image Quality Concerns: Check lens cleanliness. Ensure appropriate shooting mode and exposure settings are selected for the scene.
  • Connectivity Problems: For USB, ensure the cable is properly connected and the computer recognizes the device. For Wi-Fi, check camera and device settings, and ensure they are within range.
