4. Setup

4.1. Battery Installation

  1. Open the battery compartment cover located at the bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert the battery with the contacts facing the correct direction, as indicated inside the compartment.
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

4.2. Memory Card Insertion

  1. Locate the memory card slot, typically on the side or bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert the 16GB SDHC Class 10 memory card into the slot until it clicks into place. Ensure the card is oriented correctly.
  3. To remove, press the card gently to release it.

4.3. Lens Attachment

  1. Remove the body cap from the camera and the rear lens cap from the Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm lens.
  2. Align the red dot on the lens with the red dot on the camera's lens mount.
  3. Gently insert the lens into the camera mount and rotate it clockwise until it locks into place with a click.
  4. To detach the lens, press the lens release button on the camera body and rotate the lens counter-clockwise.

4.4. Initial Power On

  1. Turn the power switch to the 'ON' position.
  2. Follow any on-screen prompts for initial setup, such as setting the date, time, and language.

5. Operating the Camera

5.1. Basic Controls

The Leica SL (Typ 601) features an intuitive control layout. Key controls include:

  • Shutter Button: Press halfway to focus, fully to take a picture.
  • Mode Dial: Select shooting modes (e.g., Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual, Auto).

  • Shutter Priority (S): You set the shutter speed, camera sets aperture. Ideal for controlling motion blur.
  • Manual (M): You control both aperture and shutter speed.
  • Auto: Camera automatically adjusts all settings for simple point-and-shoot operation.

5.3. Focusing

The Leica SL (Typ 601) utilizes contrast detection autofocus. You can select between autofocus (AF) and manual focus (MF) modes. In AF mode, various AF area modes are available, such as single-point, multi-point, and tracking.

5.4. Video Recording

To record video, switch the camera to video mode (if available via a dedicated switch or mode dial setting). The camera supports 1080p video resolution. Press the dedicated video record button to start and stop recording.

6. Maintenance

6.1. Cleaning

  • Camera Body: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the camera body. For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water.
  • Lens: Use the blower brush to remove dust. For smudges, apply a small amount of lens cleaning fluid to a microfiber cloth or lens tissue and gently wipe the lens surface in a circular motion.
  • Sensor: Sensor cleaning should be performed with extreme care. If dust spots appear on images, it is recommended to have the sensor professionally cleaned by an authorized service center.

6.2. Storage

When not in use, store the camera and lens in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Use the provided padded carry case for protection during transport. Remove the battery if storing for extended periods.
