Figure 3.1: Components of the FORA Lancing Device. This diagram illustrates the main parts: the protective cap, the depth indicator for setting penetration level, the ejector mechanism for safe lancet removal, and the release button to activate the lancing action.

4. Setup

4.1 Inserting a Lancet

  1. Unscrew the cap from the lancing device.
  2. Insert a new, sterile lancet firmly into the lancet holder.
  3. Twist off the protective cap from the lancet. Retain this cap for safe disposal later.
  4. Replace the lancing device cap by screwing it back on.

4.2 Adjusting Penetration Depth

The lancing device features 6 adjustable depth settings. Rotate the cap to select the desired depth. A higher number indicates a deeper penetration.

Three-step illustration for collecting blood samples: 1. Select desired depth, 2. Pull cocking control back, 3. Lance the finger.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Performing a Blood Sample (Fingerstick)

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, then dry them completely.
  2. Ensure a new lancet is inserted and the depth setting is appropriate for your skin type (refer to Section 4.2).
  3. Pull the cocking control back until it clicks. The device is now armed.
  4. Place the lancing device firmly against the side of your fingertip.
  5. Press the release button to activate the lancet.
  6. Gently massage your finger from the base towards the tip to form a blood drop. Do not squeeze excessively.
  7. Apply the blood drop to your glucose meter test strip as instructed by your meter's manual.

5.2 Alternative Site Testing (AST)

The FORA Lancing Device includes a clear alternate site end cap for testing on areas other than the fingertip, such as the forearm or palm. Consult your healthcare professional before performing AST, as results from alternative sites may differ from fingertip results, especially during periods of rapid glucose change.

  1. Remove the standard cap and replace it with the clear AST cap.
  2. Select a suitable depth setting (AST generally requires a deeper setting due to thicker skin).
  3. Pull the cocking control back until it clicks.
  4. Press the clear AST cap firmly against the chosen alternative site (e.g., forearm or palm) and hold for a few seconds to create a vacuum.
  5. Press the release button.
  6. Gently massage the area to form a blood drop.
  7. Apply the blood drop to your glucose meter test strip.

5.3 Safely Disposing of a Used Lancet

Proper disposal of used lancets is crucial to prevent accidental needle sticks and the spread of infection.

Two-step illustration for safely disposing of a used lancet: 1. Safely dispose by pushing the exposed tip into a protective disk, 2. Slide the ejector forward to remove the used lancet.

Figure 5.1: Steps for safe lancet disposal. This image shows how to cap the lancet and then use the ejector mechanism to remove it from the device.

  1. Unscrew the lancing device cap.
  2. Carefully place the protective cap (removed in Section 4.1) back onto the used lancet, ensuring the needle is fully covered. Alternatively, if your lancets come with a protective disk, push the exposed tip into the disk on a hard surface.
  3. Slide the ejector forward to release the capped lancet into an approved sharps container.
  4. Replace the lancing device cap.
